Many people with back pain spend a lot of their working day sitting down which contributes to the problem. Standing desks are becoming more popular, however this set up takes it to a new level. You'll imagine my delight when I visited a friend recently to see this in the home office. How clever! The desk was from Ikea and the treadmill was bought second hand from Gumtree and modified to fit. Inspired?

The trend towards workplaces having standing desks, standing meetings or even walking meetings are catching on, as we become more aware of the damage that prolonged sitting is having for our health. This however is one I haven't seen before...the planking meeting! You won't be surprised to learn this particular type of get together is on average 79% quicker than a normal boardroom meeting!

The ageing process can be a bit rough (especially if your birthday happens to fall on February 29th!) but as our bodies get older it becomes even more important to look after them. Simple exercises like walking and gentle arm weights are a great place to start. Ask your Physiotherapist for an assessment and exercise program if you are unsure of what you should be doing, or if you have specific issues you want to target, like balance, flexibility or core strength.

Did you know that improving your posture can dramatically improve your overall health and well-being? Some of the benefits of good posture include reduced pain in your neck and back, improved breathing and function of your diaphragm, improved movement at your shoulders and through your back and reduced risk of conditions such as disc bulge. If you know your posture is not as good as it could be you may need to start an exercise program to stretch out your tight muscles and strengthen your weak muscles. A visit to your physiotherapist is a great place to start as they can properly assess your posture and provide you with a plan to address it.

With children across the country heading back to school this week, it's worth spending a few moments thinking about their backpacks. Many Australian children report schoolbag related back pain which can include neck and shoulder pain, muscle strains and joint injuries, not to mention postural changes that can last into adulthood. Physiotherapy is as much about education and giving you the tools to manage your own health, as it is about hands on treatment. One of the biggest things I find people struggle with is creating new habits around exercise. If you are one of these people, try to make small changes over a longer period of time and don't put unrealistic pressure on yourself to change everything at once.
