Have you ever been told you have a leg length discrepancy? I have and so have many of my clients. I recently saw a 7 year old who complained of sore calves and hamstrings after 'nippers' and football training. She had been getting chiropractic adjustments on her hips and spine, which helped, but only lasted a few days. Her assessment revealed a very mild functional LLD. We did some work on the soft tissue of the leg in question. One half hour session was all it took to correct her LLD and subsequently her calf and hamstring pain. Incidentally, the torsion in her pelvis corrected without any direct corrections. She had a training run later in the day and had no problems with her hamstrings or calves and then went on to star in her winning state finals! Awesome results!! A leg length discrepancy is effectively like walking on sloping ground for just about every step you take. Leg length discrepancies (LLD's) are one of the leading causes of back pain and injury. LLD's can be structural or functional. Structural LLD's are anatomical differences in the length of the actual bone. Functional LLD's are 'apparent' differences in the length of each leg. A LLD is often accompanied by rotations and 'bends' in the joints of the leg bones and an imbalance in the pelvis and can lead to further adaptations in the upper body. Functional LLD's can be addressed through soft tissue work to help 'reposition' the bones for improvements in back pain and performance. So, if you know you have a leg length discrepancy (or know someone who does), then maybe its time to do something about it. Call me for an appointment. Unfortunately there is not much you can do for a LLD on your own. It will take bodywork to have it fixed. If you are walking around with this problem and in any kind of pain because of it, you don’t need to be. I will say this here and probably repeat myself over and over again… There is no need to be walking around in pain, when it can be fixed with a relatively simple adjustment. I am amazed at how long it can take for people to walk around in pain before getting over it enough to come and have it fixed. Why wait? Why live in pain when you don’t have to? If you or someone you know is living in pain from a leg length discrepancy (or anything else) email me at hugh@northernbeachesperformancemassage.com.au or give me a call on 0402 205 851 and book in today. To your health and vitality…
