Moving Tip #1: Arrange Post Mail Redirection Service with Australia Post to redirect your mail to your new address. According to their website you can redirect your mail for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months for permanent moves, or up to a chosen date if moving temporarily. Just remember to allow 3 full business days for them to process your application before it can start. Moving Tip #2: Notify the providers of your essential services such as Electricity, Gas, and Water of your planned relocation. Some of these providers require 30 days notice to disconnect and reconnect your services so make sure you give them plenty of notice... Moving Tip #3: To ensure your valuables aren't damaged or broken in transit, it is essential to ensure your boxes are packed correctly. It may seem like a simple task, but when it comes to packing for a successful move there is a right and a wrong way to pack. 1. Reinforce the bottom of the box with packing tape. This will ensure that any items in the box don't fall through the bottom in transit. 2.Pack heavy items on the bottom of the box and lighter items on top. 3.Fill the empty space of the box with fabric, like dishtowels or clothing, or use butcher paper or bubble wrap for support. This will ensure that items in the box don't shift during a move. 4.Don't pack boxes heavier than 20 kilograms. Not only will they be difficult to lift, but an overly heavy box is more likely to tear or give out at the bottom. 5.Make sure that all packing boxes for moving can close and seal properly on top. Never pack a box that can't close or that has items sticking out of the top. Moving Tip #4: If necessary, Arrange childcare for your moving day. Little ones can find moving house fun, scary and tiring all at the same time. To make it easier for them (and you) consider asking a friend or family member to look after them during moving day. Moving Tip #5: Are you moving house with pets? Remember to register your pets with the local council and make sure that your pets' details are up-to-date. Update their microchip details and ensure that any new contact details are on their tag. Keeping your pet's water bowls, favourite treats and toys handy can help make the transition a little smoother for them, and lastly wait until all the unpacking is done before you introduce your pets to their new home. Moving Tip #6: Label all boxes clearly. Make sure that all boxes are labelled clearly with their contents. You can take it a step further by using colour coding to organise where boxes will go in your new home. The more information on the outside of the box the easier it will be for you to unpack. It will also make it easy and efficient for movers to unload your belongings. Remember most removalists charge an hourly rate, so if you are really organised, the chances are you will have to pay less in total moving expenses. Moving Tip #7: If your locating to a new suburb or city completely you may need to seek new medical specialists. Inform your current doctor, dentist and other medical specialists of your move. Collect your records or request transfer to your new practitioners. Moving Tip #8: Eat down the pantry! (Plus the fridge and freezer!) A couple of weeks before moving day, try using up as much of the food in your pantry, fridge and freezer as you can. This not only reduces the amount of food you need to transport to your new home, but it also reduces your grocery shopping bill, encourages a little bit of creativity and minimizes food that might go to waste.
