We hope everyone had a lovely Christmas! We are currently on a holiday break right now. The Caboolture Clinic is closed until Monday the 9th of January, however the North Lakes Clinic will be opened on Tuesday 3rd of January, Thursday 5th of January and Saturday 7th of January from morning till midday. Normal clinic hours will resume starting on the week of Monday the 9th of January. LOW BACK PAIN Have low back pain (LBP)? You are not alone! Around "80% of people will experience LBP at some stage in their lives." But fear not, because if you are well equipped with knowledge to tackle LBP, it can be avoided. In the next couple of posts we will be outlining the 3 most effective ways to prevent and or manage LBP. Causes of LBP: • Back muscle strains • Ligament sprains • Bulging discs • Bone injuries • Poor posture • Weak core Management of LBP: 1. Core stability Core stability (or strength) is what determines your body to dynamically control and support your spine via deep and specific core muscles. Your core muscles (e.g. transverse abdominus, pelvic floor) not only help to keep the body upright and for movement, but also helps to stabilize, control, support and move the region around your lumbar spine and pelvis. When these core muscles are weak, additional stress is applied to the spine as it supports the body, and back injury or pain is more likely. However, we can reactivate and strengthen these muscles via specific retraining through the help of your physiotherapist or exercise physiologist. Research on exercise therapy, in particular core stability training (Pilates, Yoga) has had strong evidence in the prevention and treatment of LBP. It has appeared to be "effective in relieving pain and improving back-specific function for patients with chronic LBP in the short term." So REMEMBER - the stronger your core muscles are, the better you are well equipped to combat LBP!
