20 Ways to Foster Values in Children by Leah Davies

Crick's Family Daycare distributed a statement of approval last week to parents, to obtain permission for their child saying grace or giving thanks before eating. Our children need to be empowered, to be grateful and thankful because not all children around the world have what they have. As an educator I believe in teaching young children values along with the ABC. Good strong values moulds a young child's character as they develop and learn. Values are applied to everyday experiences as our young children grow older. The following values are implemented daily at Crick's Family Daycare: Love, Forgiveness, Kindness, Gratefulness, Responsibility, Bravery, Honesty, Patience, Fauthfulness, and Hardwork. As parents we all want what is best for our children, so that they too can become successful adults through life's journey. Tip for parents: Role modelling is the way to go. You set the example, lead the way and your child will follow. I like what Leah Davies had to say about fostering values in children. Artwork at Crick's Family Daycare. It is through art that young children are able to express themselves and their creativity is developed and enhanced. Young children get rid of fears and anger and express joy, feelings of safety, when they paint. There is no right way for their art to look when completed and the process of creating is more important than the end product. Art assists young children in their development in areas such as their concentration, small muscle development, hand-eye co-ordination, sensory discrimination, problem solving, early literacy skills and decision making. Tip: Parents, always celebrate your child's interest and encourage them. "Now that is an awesome piece of art, I like your choice of colours and patterns". Its these kind of words that will build your child's confidence and will give them pride in their own ideas. Educator: Sharon Crick

Having a fun time at Crick's Family Daycare! Sand and Water Play! Outdoor play is very important for young children relating to their learning and development. Young children develop the ability to enquire, explore and modify their own working theories about the outdoor environment. Sand and Water Play are sensory activities, providing valuable skills such as turn taking, sharing, patience and social skills. Young children are able to expand their imagination and creativity through pouring, digging, building, sifting, stirring and measuring. Muscle skills in the arms, lower body (lifting and carrying) eye and hand co-ordination and fine motor skills are all improved relating to their physical development. Tip: Role modelling is important. As an Educator I wear my sunhat during outdoor play to be an example and promote sun safety.

This is a good purchase! A 95 piece train set made up of an entire town around the railroad. This set includes; train rails, scenery, people, buildings, magnetic train carriages, bridges, road signs, and engines. I picked up the box in the store and immediately realised, all the positive learning outcomes were right there! Community Awareness is very important in a young child's learning and development. The Police, Fire Station and the Hospital are just some of the places that help us in time of need and keep us safe. Young children develop a sense of belonging and their well being is enhanced when learning opportunities are created and provided for them. Educators, when invited, engaging in this play, will make children feel supported and their interest will be extended and challenged. It is so important to be part of a child's play. Sustained conversations and social interactions are encouraged and at the same time relationships are being built. I can definitely see the 5 learning areas in this play. A Sense of identity, community, well being, confidence and involvement and effective communication. Numeracy and Literacy is promoted with this play. There are different concepts like opposites, push/pull, up/down, forwards/backwards and many more. Colour concept green means GO red means Stop. Mathematical concept 2 blue trains and another 2 red trains makes a carriage of 4 trains. A tip: Wooden toys are the best buy it's a natural. Varnishing this toy would be long lasting and durable in your daycare.

Play dough is fun for exploring and building up strength in all the tiny hand muscles, making fingers and hands ready for pencil and muscle control.Tactile play encourages squashing, squeezing, rolling, flattening, chopping, cutting, raking, poking and shredding, All of these actions enhance fine motor development including hand-eye co-ordination and general concentration in young children. I have observed unsettled children in a new environment offering them play dough has a calming effect helping them settle giving them a sense of belonging. Play dough is a good sensory play activity where children's senses are stimulated helping them develop cognitively, socially, emotionally, physically and creatively. MY FAVOURITE PLAY DOUGH RECIPE 1 cup of flour 1/2 cup of salt 2 tablespoons cream of tartar 1 tablespoon of olive oil food colouring of your choice 1 cup of boiling water. Method: mix all ingredients except the boiling water together into a large mixing bowl. Add the boiling water and mix well. (note the food colouring will mix in better if added to the boiling water).Stir well until the mixture is combined, Roll it out on a flat surface and you ready for some play dough fun. A tip: Play dough will last longer if it is stored in an air tight plastic container or plastic wrap. Have fun....
