The best treatment for patients with arthritis limited to one part of the knee joint is controversial. A recent publication suggests that partial joint replacement allows higher level of activity and better durability that an osteotomy (bone realignment surgery). Patient-specific instrumented (PSI) partial joint replacement is what I generally offer in my practice : http://jbjs.org/content/99/2/113
When Is It Safe for Patients to Drive After Right Total Knee Arthroplasty?
Interesting recent paper that challenges the dogma that patients need to wait 6-8 weeks before driving after total knee replacement. The authors' observation of 2-4 weeks is inline with my personal observation and practice (with modern surgical techniques): http://www.arthroplastyjournal.org/article/S0883-5403(16)30126-7/fulltext

Patient-specific (PSI) Partial knee replacement is an attractive option for patients with arthritis confined to only one aspect of the knee joint. The surgery is planned pre-operatively via a specialised MRI scan, which then allows engineers to 3D-print patient-specific instruments to guide intraoperative placement of the implant. Very elegant.

I enjoyed performing minimally invasive, innovative "mini-open" hip surgery in Salzkotten, Germany with colleague Marco Ezechielli, who treats a number of high profile German sports stars. Note the German engineering in the advanced self-retractor system that negates the need for a surgical assistant. Fantastic engineering.

On route back to Melbourne after visiting several of the best hip surgeons across Europe (France, Switzerland and Germany). I look forward to implementing these cutting-edge techniques in my practice, for the benefit of my patients. I also hope to implement some observed German efficiency protocols, French flair and Swiss style and elegance in my hospital practice :)
