Description
Flinders University Cricket Club
Great club with awesome facilities and 4 teams playing in a strong competition. New players always welcome. 0409716664
The Flinders University Cricket Club (The FUCC) was formed in 1966 (first season 1966/67) and has fielded teams in both the Adelaide Turf Cricket Association (ATCA) and the South Australian Cricket Association (SACA).
From 1966/67 to 1982/83, teams were fielded in both the SACA and ATCA, then just SACA from 1983/84 to 1990/91 and since 1991/92 we have participated solely in the ATCA. Whilst often competitive, finals appearances were rare in the SACA grades and the clubs 3 premierships prior to 1991/92 were from our lower grades that competed in the ATCA.
The departure from SACA to fielding all our teams in the ATCA from 1991/92 lifted the restriction of only students and post graduates being able to play for the club. This opened the door for more experienced and cricket hardened players to come and join the FUCC (whilst continuing to attract students).
We worked our way from our initial ATCA entry point of A3 in 1991/92 to A1 Premier Grade in 1995/96 (after the 1994/95 A2 flag). Relegation occurred after the 1999/2000 season but we won the 2000/01 A2 flag and went straight back to A1 Premier in 2001/02 where we had the clubs highest ever ATCA placing by finishing 4th after a semi-final loss to the powerful Grange Cricket Club. Our next 2 seasons were poor and we dropped down to A3 for the 2004/05 season. A new breed of young players ensured we only hung around in A3 for one year taking out the flag against Kilburn at Walkerville on a glorious weekend.
From 2005/06 we have competed consistently in A2 and have threatened finals in most seasons without finishing higher than 5th. We have however enjoyed regular finals appearances for our B grade & limited over side during this time and the club has earn't a strong reputation in the ATCA of always giving a good account ourselves throughout all grades. We currently field 3 teams (1 who plays 2-day cricket & 2 limited overs team) and over our history we have always fielded no less than 3 teams.
The last 20 years have easily been the FUCC’s most successful, with regular finals and grand final appearances throughout the grades. This has resulted in 3 A grade premierships (A2 in 1994/95, 2000/2001 & A3 in 2004/05), 1 B grade (B1 in 1995/96) and 3 One Day Grand Final victories in 7 years (LO.D in 2008/09 LOC in 2012/13 LOB in 2014/15 certainly a successful era for Rusty and the boys.
The following is part of a piece penned by Life Member, Keith Seidel.
“Many players and characters have graced the Flinders Ovals with their exploits, names consigned to history by the unavoidably transient of student sporting clubs. At times there has been controversy but the history of the club is of enjoyment and acceptance that the members are there to play cricket. The cliques that dominate many clubs have rarely surfaced at this great club, and any such indications have been squashed quickly”.
These words best sum up our club as our ethos is to not take ourselves too seriously and enjoy our cricket to the fullest. Sure, we play to win and we will take any success that comes our way, but there is a certain uniqueness about playing for the FUCC’s and I hope all players, old and new, continue to enjoy their time with the club.

facebook.comWEEKLY WRAP - 17 December 2016 A RARE TIE AND A "RECKORD" RUN CHASE The A grade head into the Christmas break with only one loss in six games after a remarkable tie on Saturday. Plenty of Flinders A grade teams in the past would have folded chasing 200 for victory but Chop (50), Brucey (30), Dhan (33) and Robb (39*) all showed the required application and at 7/190 we probably should have won. Ravi was the last man out with Robb stranded at the other end with the scores tied on 199. We will still take the tie and quite odd that we still sit in 8th spot on the ladder despite 3 wins, 1 tie, 1 draw and 1 loss for the season but still very well placed to challenge for the top 4 after Christmas. Nothing sketchy about the Animal's run chase this week when they chased down the Multiculturals 178 for the loss of 3 wickets in the 40th over thanks to a superb 106* from Gus "World" Reckord. At 2/21 things were looking grim but Gus received great support from Howie Chambers (23) and Tommy "Chunder" Adler 23* for partnerships of 91 and an unbroken 70 to guide the boys home. Earlier, the bowlers toiled hard with Rory (3/39) and Simon Uppill (3/40) doing the most damage. That's 21 wickets before Xmas for Rory which see's him top of the LO.2 wicket takers. The 3 Gig's looked set for their best total in several games when we reached 2/83 on the back of Lovers (46) and Sankha Livera (29) but an all too familiar batting collapse of 8/30 saw us only post a score of 113. It only took two hits for Lovers to get that timing and touch back and looking forward to what he can bring post-Xmas. 113 was looking enough when we had PAOC 7/76 thanks to Aqeel Malik (4/41) picking up the first 4 and Sankha and Sanj getting the next 3 but the PAOC no. 8 & 9 batted sensibly and got them home without further loss. Only 2 wins before Xmas for the 3 Gig's but a run of 5 out of our next 6 games at home when we resume will hopefully give us a chance to post some much needed wins. The Chehade Boys picked up their 3rd win of the season with a great bowling display to dismiss Brahma Lodge for 94. Rehmann (3/39), Akhtar (3/9) and Johnno (2/14) did the damage to ensure a small run chase for the batters. After reaching 3/73 we stumbled a little before passing the Lodgers 7 wickets down. Ahmed (33) and Qamer (21) did enough to ensure we got the runs. Don't forget the T20 game at Flinders tonight at 5.10pm. A win should see us progress to the next round so lets get along to support the boys and have a few Christmas brews to celebrate the first half of the season. Just a reminder that the A grade resume on 7 January and the LO teams get an extra week off and resume on 14 January.
WEEKLY WRAP - 10 DECEMBER 2016 GLORY FOR RORY Rory O'Brien (6/13) has finally broken the 4 wicket barrier to record career best figures in an inspired spell of bowling to knock over Goodwood for 75 in our LO.2 clash on Saturday. Tommy K (1/9) was also impressive in his 6.5 miserly overs. In reply things weren't looking good at 4/10 and 7/45 but the skipper Tads (15) and Rory (14) helped get us home with 2 wickets left in the shed. Another sketchy run chase but the Animals just keep getting it done and should head into Christmas in the top 2. It's game on for the A grade after they dismissed SPOC for 199 despite the B1 Bully making a ton. Lewis (4/34) in Robb's absence pulled off his best bowling performance for the FUCC and was well supported by Ravi (3/46) and Captain Dhan (2/31). We had an awkward period to bat until stumps and lost Josh but Chop and Brucey looked solid and we will set about the target next week from 1/18. The 3 Gig's, minus Gig's due to his brothers wedding, let themselves down with the bat again and could only muster 91 with Sanj Mendis (18) top scoring. It was great to have Lovers back in FUCC colours with his special brand of humour but that wasn't enough to prevent Multicultural knocking off the runs for the loss of 4 wickets. Sanj was the best of the bowlers with 3 wickets and manged to take a nice caught and bowled without breaking his finger this time. The Chehade Boys couldn't convert the numerous starts with Liam Elliott (27) top scoring, however they still mustered a reasonable 9/123 thanks to a 36 run stand for the 10th wicket from veterans Alby (15*) and Johnno (17*). It took Golden Grove 36 overs to get the runs but they only lost 2 wickets in the process with Alby and Rohan Joshna picking up 1 each. Last week before the Xmas Break lads and don't forget FUCC 'n' SCULL back at Flinders after play on Saturday evening. No training of course next week but try and get along to support the T20 team who will be striving for a win and possible advancement to the next round of the Div 2 T20 comp. THIS WEEK Saturday, 17 December (1.00pm) B1 - FUCC v SPOC at Flinders No. 1 - day 2 LO.2 - FUCC v Multicultural at Park 21 West (cnr Goodwood Rd & South Tce, City) LO.3 - FUCC v PAOC at Park 15 (cnr Bartels Rd & Dequettevile Tce, City) LO.6 - FUCC v Brahma Lodge at Flinders No. 2 Tuesday, 20 December (5.10pm) T20 - FUCC v Unley at Flinders No. 1
ROBB'S MOBB GET IT DONE The A grade did what I asked of them in last weeks wrap and got the job done against Unley on Saturday. Brucey (31), Barnesy (24) and Robb (34) did enough to ensure a 4 wicket victory before we were dismissed for a slightly disappointing 186 after being 6/167. But we were able to pick up some handy bonus points by having Unley 7/141 in their 2nd innings with Lewis Rayner (2/38) and Evo (2/7), proving to Robb he is a useful bowling option, the best of the bowlers. That's 3 wins and 2 losses heading into the last game before Christmas and a likely spot in the top 4 if we can win our 3rd on the trot. The LO sides all got beaten but were unlucky not to win 1 or 2 of them. The Chehade Boys came agonisingly close chasing Trinity's 149 to fall short by one run after a remarkable 49 run last wicket stand between Abdul Rehman (61) and Johnno (0*). Not the first time Johnno has contributed time only to a heroic last wicket stand but at least you know he will support his partner to the bitter end. The lads looked no hope at 6/37 but Abdul and Danish Ahktar (30) gave us a chance before Abdul's dash for victory at the end. Earlier Danish (2/15), Alby (3/17) and Jay Chabria (3/5) ensured we weren't chasing too many. The Animals suffered their first loss of the season after making 142 thanks to Tommy (37), Horse (25) and Rory (23) but the lads will rue coming up 18 balls short of batting their full 40 overs. Rory (2/15) and Tommy K (2/17) did their best to bring home a victory that was looking likely when International were 7/93, but they managed to get the runs without further loss. An early collapse punctuated by the authors 3rd consecutive duck was the story for the 3 Gig's. We did well to recover and make 9/116 after Crets (17) steadied the ship and then Mace (20), FUCC debutant Blair Sanderson (34*) and Clubba (14*) made valuable contributions. Mace (3/26) - super again - and Clubba (2/28) made Muticultural work for their victory but they managed to pass us 6 wickets down. In our T20 game last night we just couldn't chase down Concordia's 9/119 and finished 9/112. Concordia looked set for a big score early but Sankha Livera (2/12) was superb with his leg-spin and Lewis (1/9), Dhan (2/20) and guest player Jake Turnbull (2/32) all contributed. In reply we struggled to recover from 2 early wickets but Sanjay Mendis (30) and Chop Thomas (21) steadied our chase before a run of boundaries from Dhan (18) and Mace (14) put us in sight of victory but we fell 7 runs short. THIS WEEK Saturday, 10 December (1.00pm) B1 - FUCC v SPOC at Flinders No. 1 - day 1 of 2 LO.2 - FUCC v Goodwood at Lockleys Oval (Rutland Ave, Lockleys) LO.3 - FUCC v Multicultural at Cabra West (Little St, Cumberland Park) LO.6 - FUCC v Golden Grove at Flinders No. 2

DHAN THE MHAN Due to the Test Match only the A grade were in action on Saturday and Dhan Uswatte and Robb Muirhead, fresh from 50's last week, got it done with the ball this week taking 5 and 3 wickets respectively to knock over Unley for 160. Great to see the experienced leaders of the club performing well and setting a great example to all the new guys at our club. Ravi and Sankha (on A grade debut) chimed in with 1 wicket each in what was an impressive performance from the bowling unit at the unusual start time of 11am to accommodate those blue blood SACA members such as our skipper. In reply we have made a solid response and went to stumps at 2/58 with Evo and Brucey at the crease after Earley (18) and Chop (11) saw off the new ball. A massive first session next week which will likely define our season. No pressure lads!!! - just get the job done. THIS WEEK Saturday, 3 December (1.00pm) B1 - FUCC v Unley at Kingswood Oval (Belair Rd, Kingswood) - day 2 LO.2 - FUCC v International at Flinders No. 1 LO.3 - FUCC v Multicultural at Adelaide High No. 4 (off West Tce, Adelaide) LO.6 - FUCC v Trinity OS at Flinders No. 2 Tuesday, 6 December (5.10pm) T20 - FUCC v Concordia at Flinders No. 1
B1 - end of day 1. Unley all out 160. Uswatte 5. Robb 3. Sankha 1. Ravi 1. 25 overs to bat FUCC 2/58 Earle 18. Chop 11. Evans 8*. Bruce 12*. Full day for 103 runs next week. Well done FUCCers. Good position let's go on with it.
T20 WRAP A great few days for the FUCC with a Round 1 T20 victory tonight. We looked like having to chase a score of 120 plus when Reynella had reached 1/48 in the 9th but Tommy and Dhan turned to spin then back to pace and we took 9/32 to dismiss them for 80 in the 17th over. Lewis 3/14, Gus 2/14 and Sankha 2/12 were the chief destroyers backed up by some great keeping from Tommy 2c 1s and good fielding in particular Rory with 3c and a run out. We were never really troubled in our run chase thanks to Barnesy 23 off 24 and Gus 31* off 31 and got up by 6 wickets with 33 balls to spare. A great start to our campaign and now we look forward to our next game in a fortnight at FUCC Park against Concordia. Well done FUCCers.
T20 victory. FUCCs chasing reynella's 80 win by 6 wickets in the 15th. Player scores to follow.
WEEKLY WRAP - 19 NOVEMBER 2016 FOUR OUT OF FOUR FOR THE FUCC On a watershed day in recent FUCC history we had 4 wins on Saturday with our 3 LO teams all chasing down small totals and the A grade getting up after looking gone halfway through their run chase. Some great bowling by the LO teams saw the 2's, 3's and 6's knock over their opponents for 65, 72 and 74 respectively with great bowling performances from Adler (3/11), O'Brien (2/11), Chambers (2/17), Macey (4/21), Cretan (4/2), Akhtar (4/7), Johnno (3/11) & Rehman (3/12) doing the damage. All teams got the runs fairly easily with plenty of overs to spare. The Animals 2 down - Reckord (24*) and Aloi (21), the 3 Gig's 3 down - Thilan (36*) and Townsend (18*); and the Chehade Boys 1 down - Haroon (57*). With plenty of lads unavailable on Saturday this was a great effort and keeps the Animals undefeated and 2 wins 3 losses for the other two LO teams. The A grade had a remarkable run chase and pulled off a famous win at a Flinders No. 1 oval that was looking spectacular on a warm November day. Payneham made a good score of 6/176 off their 40 overs with Micko (2/23) back to near his best and Lewis (2/43) also handy. In reply we looked as though we would come up well short at 3/53 at the halfway mark of our chase but Earley (39) and Dhan (63) got some momentum going with a partnership of 42. At 5/98 Robb (59*) came to the crease and batted sensibly letting Dhan do the hitting but as soon Dhan got out Robb took over and mixed some big hitting and working the strike beautifully to see us home with just under 2 overs to spare. We were entitled to bat out our 40 overs and finished 8/189. Robb only hit 5 boundaries in his quickfire 59* but 2 of these were massive 6's and he ran plenty of 2's and 3's in a great captains knock. Obviously Dhan's innings was crucial in giving Robb the chance to bring us home and score somewhere around 90 runs in our last 10 overs. A great win to the A grade and back into the pack of teams challenging for a finals berth in B1. THIS WEEK Tuesday, 22 November (5.10pm) T20 - FUCC v Reynella at Reynella Oval (Oval Rd, Old Reynella) Saturday, 26 November (11.00am) B1 - FUCC v Unley at Kingswood Oval (Belair Rd, Kingswood) - day 1 of 2 No LO games due to the Test Match - resume on Saturday, 3 December.
4 from 4, good day for the FUCC!!
