Dongara pie makers Stuart and Leanne Doyle of Highway Caltex, in their third year, scooped up 15 awards out of eleven pie categories. Fifteen varieties of their gourmet pies won one gold, eight silver and six bronze medals. A trial fish and prawn pie, made for the customers came out on top winning gold in the seafood category. Hot favourites on the day included chicken, prawn laksa and the steak and Guinness pie, favouring a silver medal and the gold curry pie awarded bronze. Busy country pie makers, Mr and Mrs Doyle keep it traditional, trimming their own beef, and recently decided to open their roadhouse 24 hours. “We have been approached by roadhouses up north to supply pies and we are thinking to open a franchise.”
