Jude - Coastal Glass
Description
Constantly inspired by the coastline & sea of North Devon and Cornwall, I ponder and transcribe visually in glass the wonders of creation. I started working with glass early in 2008, experimenting with recycled platters, coloured mulberry papers, silver and gold leaf and other such materials, mainly creating platters reminiscent of life in the sea.
Further exploration beckoned me, so I trained with Creative Guild of Glass in Bristol, learning how to make stained glass panels (leaded glass), copper foiling, otherwise known as the Tiffany technique, and glass fusing.
I work instinctively, probably because I am impatient by nature and don't like planning. I can't draw. I never did art at school and never thought of myself as artistic. However, I LOVE working with glass. I find I can cut glass freehand to create the ideas that are in my head, thereby expressing myself and all that I see around me.
I enjoy playing around with ideas, sometimes just thinking things through, deciding what will work and what may not. Sometimes I push the boundaries just for the fun of it. Not all my experiments work!
My favourite earlier pieces are my large nautical mirrors; irregular mirror waves with fish swimming in-between. Anything reminiscent of the sea stirs me, so this combination of waves, fish and practicality works for me.
I also enjoy glass fusing, using genuine Bullseye Glass in my kiln. Bullseye glass gives a wonderful clarity, so evocative of the play of light often experienced at the coast on a bright sunny day.
My love of all things coastal is reflected in my fused glass beach houses, my yatchs in the deep blue sea, and my fish.
A natural follow-on has been mosaics. I trained in glass mosaics at Exeter, and this is my preferred mosaic medium. I have bought small square mosaic tiles (tesserae) to work with, but tend to find this limiting. I prefer the freedom of glass, being able to cut the size and shape that I want. I think it's the non-conformist in me! However, having a large stock of tesserae means I really ought to knuckle down and experiment with them.
I also create unique fused glass jewellery, and can make pendants and matching cuff links for those special occasions in your life.
I hope that you enjoy looking at my page.

facebook.comThis weeks big news is that Spectrum have ceased trading. Spectrum are one of the major glass manufacturers globally, so this could have a huge knock-on effect within the Glass Art world. I never switched to the cheaper Spectrum glass even when my main Supplier did. I have always used Bullseye Glass & been pleased with it, so wasn't convinced about changing over. Am very glad that I didn't. I have plenty in stock, so whatever happens in the global glass market, you can still commission me to create something unique for you.
