This will push most of the water out of the trap, lessening the mess when you pull the trap. If you have a double sink, be sure to plug the other drain to contain the air pressure. If the strainer isn't a screw-down style, you'll have to hold it down while you plunge the drain.

Handyman Tips - Tip on locking your front door Posted by Eli Larreau This may seem like a silly tip but trust me, it is a good one. If you are one of the people that likes to turn the lock on your door knob, and then pull the door shut behind you to lock your front door, I recommend that you change this habit. Your front door should have a door knob and a deadbolt. You should always lock the deadbolt. The deadbolt is the one that will slow down an intruder trying to get into your home. Locking the door knob is not really necessary as long as you lock the deadbolt. But safety isn’t the only reason to lock your deadbolt instead of the door knob. It is very easy to lock the door knob and pull the door shut behind you when the key is still inside your home. You can’t do this when you lock the deadbolt. If you have forgotten the key inside your home, then you will not be able to lock the deadbolt. You will never lock your keys inside your home if you only lock the deadbolt. Make it a habit to lock the deadbolt and not the door knob.

TIP FOR THE DAY: Silent Screen Door If your door slams shut with a bang, you can place a couple of short beads of clear silicone caulk along the jamb at a few of the contact points. This will soften the blow. Be sure to prop the door open for a couple of hours after application, to let the bead of silicone dry completely.

Dental Floss your door If you have an interior door that seems to want to swing shut all the time here is a little trick that may help you get rid of those doorstops you have been using. For doors that are gently swinging closed and refuse to stay open when you open them take some dental floss or other thin, strong string and wrap it around and pull it into the spaces where your door hinges come together (the joints of the two plates where the pin slides down in). Sometimes all that is needed is a bit more friction on the hinge to stop it from swinging closed. You'll usually have at least 4 hinge seams per hinge that you can work the floss into and you can wrap it around multple times if needed until you get the desired results.
This has always been a frustrating thing for me, so I will certainly use this Tip for the Day! Stop sinksprayer hang-ups If you have to jiggle the hose as you pull out your kitchen sink sprayer, chances are the hose is catching on the shutoff valves. For smooth operation, slip 1/2-in. foam pipe insulation over the pipes and shutoff handles. Tape it if it won’t stay put. Get the insulation at home centers for about $3. Francis Bradley
Solutions Before you go mixing all the industrial-strength chemicals you have under your sink to create a Frankenstein mega cleaner, know a few things about what you’re mixing first—you could go Walter Whiting yourself without realizing it. Now, we know that you don’t need no instructions to know how to do a good job. But’s it’s hard to do a good job when you’re overcome by chlorine gas—you know, the stuff the Germans used in World War I, which is created when you mix bleach and vinegar. Mixing bleach with ammonia, you’ll end up with some nitrogen chlorides, another nasty airborne poison. Just know what’s in the things you’re using. Here are some usual suspects that, while you might not think it, most likely contain ammonia: Glass cleaners Multi-surface cleaners Chemical drain cleaners Toilet/bathroom cleaning solution Yes, there are bleaches that don’t contain sodium hypochlorite, but it’s not worth risking, really. But when it comes to stain removal and household cleaning, baking soda and white vinegar on their own or in conjunction work well. Pouring down 1 cup of baking soda and 1 cup of vinegar can clear a clogged drain. (Finally, a reason to recreate the volcano you made for the science fair.) Just be sure to wash it down afterward.
