The Thomasville YMCA Adult Sports have come to an end for this year. We had many adults play: Open Softball, Kickball, Flag Football, Volleyball, Basketball and Church Softball. We also had a large number of adults join our inaugural “Couch 2 5K” program during Team Lean. I would like to thank Mr. Tom Everett and Mrs. Greer Cox for supporting Adult Sports at the Thomasville YMCA. I hope that everybody had a good time, and is already looking forward to next year. We hope that all of our Adult Sports continue to grow in Thomasville. We are already working on having a 5K trail run and/or a 5K Obstacle/Mud Run in the late fall or early winter. Keep an eye on the Thomasville YMCA Facebook Page for updates. Cliff Heard Thomasville YMCA Adult Sports Director 22-226-0133 Ext. 127 or cheard@ymca-thomasville.org

Monday, May 9th of 2016 was just like any other day for Jack Lauder as he headed to the racquetball court. Always competitive and up for a challenging game, Jack went to play a ball, lost his balance and hit his head against the wall. He collapsed over and started gasping for air. What was first thought to be a heart attack was actually a broken C-1 vertebra in his neck. A spinal cord injury that occurs at the first three cervical vertebrae will interfere with breathing and heart rate because the nerve which controls the diaphragm is paralyzed. That means you can't breathe on your own. Anything that stops your breathing will of course, very quickly stop the heart from beating. The Y staff was quickly alerted to the situation and began performing life-saving CPR. The immediate response time is acknowledged to saving his life. All the Y staff goes through CPR and First Aid certifications so everyone is prepared to serve our members if something should occur. The road ahead would be a long one for Jack. There were multiple surgeries, strenuous rehabilitation, and relearning life skills that we all take for granted. Jack’s long journey to mend both physically and mentally could not have been possible without his loving wife, Karyl. Her endless support ranged from going through trainings so she could provide home care to being his biggest cheerleader. The doctor’s credited his recovery to his healthy active lifestyle. So only 9 months later Jack was already back at the Y working out 3 to 4 times a week. His workout regimen includes working on his core, incline treadmill, elliptical, and some weight training. Jack said “The support of my Y family has been tremendous. Knowing they were keeping up with my progress and then welcomed me back with open arms is something that I will always cherish.” Today, May 9th, marks the one year anniversary for Jack’s injury. He is a living testament that with a healthy lifestyle, perseverance, and loving support you can overcome great obstacles. Jack, we thank you for being an inspiration to so many people and wish you continued success in your return to health!
