Do you still subscribe to the low-fat diet mantra? "Estrogen, progesterone, cortisol, DHEA, and testosterone are made from cholesterol; if we don’t eat enough, our bodies take cholesterol from our endocrine system to use for brain function and repair. When that happens, it’s almost impossible for our bodies to maintain hormonal balance. When following a low-fat diet, what are women eating? Carbs! Carbohydrates are metabolized into sugars which cause weight gain and insulin resistance which in turn disturbs normal ovulation because it converts healthy estrogen into androgens (testosterone). This is a classic sign of PCOS that I see quite often. Starch, sugar and caffeine increase androgen production and women often complain about dark hairs on their face and inability to lose weight. Do not make the mistake of cutting carbs by adding more protein; remember that too much protein turns into sugar via glyconeogenesis." Maria Emmerich - Keto Adapted

Are you trying to reset your health in 2016? Here are our favorite ways to get started: 1. Follow a Whole30 food plan. Everything is laid out for you and there are a ton of free resources and compliant crockpot meals for busy families. http://whole30.com/2015/12/join-january-whole30/ 2. Exercise. Let's face it. For most people, it's daunting to think about spending 1 1/2 hours at a gym or working out at home. Breaking your workout up into manageable goals gets you started on the road to success. We were created to move, so move your body! Here's an example: Week 1 - 15 minutes daily - 5x's Week 2 - 15 minutes 2x daily - 5 days Week 3 - 15 minutes 2x daily - 5 days - different exercise Week 4 - 15 minutes 3x daily - 5 days - different exercise 3. Get to bed at a decent time. I have a 7 month old and it's so tempting to try to get one last thing done when he goes down for (hopefully) the night. I'm working on this one, too! :) Call me if you need help navigating a dietary change for your family - our diet has evolved considerably over the years due to food allergies, research and learning about proper nutrition. Hint: it's not what you were taught in school! Here's to a Healthy, Happy New Year!
