Schoolhouse Arts Center at Sebago Lake
Description
From its inception in 1988 as a small community theater, Schoolhouse Arts Center has grown into a thriving arts center with arts education and theater productions for all ages. The Schoolhouse Arts Center at Sebago Lake was formed in the spring of 1988 by Hank and Nancy Beebe. The first endeavor was to produce community plays. An arts education program was implemented in the fall of 1988. A board of directors was formed in 1990. In 1994, the group purchased the old Standish High School building, built in 1914, in Sebago Lake Village. The basement was used for the main performance space, with first and second floor rooms as classroom space. Schoolhouse Arts Center is a rural, non-profit, publicly supported organization dedicated to arts education and the presentation of the arts. The vision of the Schoolhouse is to bring to the community a fun, creative, educational, and supportive arts environment where people can grow, develop skills, and be involved in the arts in an area where such opportunities are lacking.
The community theater at Schoolhouse Arts Center seats 120 and produces six main stage shows per year. This past 2011 season, we sold over 2500 tickets to see Rowan & Martin's Laugh In, The MOMologues, Narnia, Unnecessary Farce, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, and Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some!).
The education program at Schoolhouse Arts Center offers arts classes to students from preschool through adult. Classes include storybook theater, acting, theater ensembles, voice, orchestra, guitar, dance, art, and conversational French. Last year, we provided 45 different classes to over 250 students and five summer programs including a Teen Shakespeare Workshop, two Musical Theater Camps, and two Summer Arts Camps, which served another 100 students.

Memories made in high school range from that first magical kiss to the last dance at Junior Prom. But high school isn't just dreamy-eyed romance. That 4-year trek is also fraught with uncertainty, betrayal, danger, stress, love, hate, and fear. Although times have changed, the basic stories remain the same. Come join the teenagers of Schoolhouse Arts Center as we share this evocative story. Even if high school is but a distant dream now; if you think your children's children would be more likely to identify, you too will lose yourself in the flood of emotions, memories, and the honest storytelling of Jerry Walker's NOW I LAY ME DOWN TO SLEEP script.
