Meet Wendy McCloskey, R.N., Nightingale Nursing Award nominee, who was nominated because: "Wendy is the most compassionate, dedicated professional we have ever worked with, and her efforts go beyond her work at Johnson Memorial. She is founder of the Macie Grace Foundation. The foundation was born out of a personal tragedy, but she turned a painful time into a way to help other grieving families heal by helping others. The foundation has become an integral part of many of the local hospitals and communities. Wendy also holds a monthly support group, Baby Steps. This group is for families that have lost a child or have a critically ill child. He kindness goes beyond these monthly meetings. If a mom calls her she is always available to listen, comfort, and share experiences. They provide the cutest teddy bears to the units so no mom has to leave the hospital with "empty arms". They donate many premature and newborn outfits so that when babies are well enough to be discharged home they have a well fitted outfit to go home in. In February 2017 Wendy left for Haiti to help start charts and evaluate children in an orphanage. Not only does Wendy make an impact on people here in the USA, she extends her kindness and dedication to nursing around the world. Wendy's nursing career and volunteer efforts make her a nightingale every day. Her commitment to helping others heal is incredible to witness. It is time to thank someone who gives constantly from her heart."

Today is Mary Guglielmo’s 100th Birthday! For those of you who don’t know her, Mary works Mondays and Thursdays in the Emergency Department doing small favors for the patients such as getting them water or an extra blanket. Mary has found true joy being a sympathetic ear. Mary Guglielmo was the seventh of 10 children born in New York's Hell's Kitchen. Her father, Frank, had a business selling ice from a horse-drawn wagon. He came to Stamford one day to help another man move there from New York and he immediately gave up the ice business and bought a house there. In 1938, she married Frank Guglielmo, a mailman, a marriage that ended with her husband's passing 35 years later and yielded two sons, Republican State Senator. Anthony "Tony" Guglielmo and his brother, Frank, who lives in Maryland. "My son moved up here in 1982. He didn't want me left alone in Stamford, so he asked me to join him," she said. "When I got here, I turned to my daughter-in-law, Doris, and asked 'Now what am I going to do?', and she said, 'Go to the hospital and volunteer.' So that's what I did." 35 years and 24,000 hours later, Mary is often heard saying she will continue to work here as long as her legs will carry her! Happy Birthday, Mary!

Meet Laura Johnson, R.N., Nightingale Nursing Award nominee, who was nominated because: "Laura has a strong work ethic and seeks opportunities to advance both her career and education. Laura is a genuine and caring individual. She is soft spoken and always has a word of encouragement for her patients. She takes the time to listen and follows through on any concerns. She has received many positive comments from patients. These include, “knowledgeable, considerate, caring, and conscientious.” She is both positive and proactive when working with staff and always willing to lend a hand no matter how menial or difficult a task may be. She is a reliable team player who relates well with both staff and management. It is because of her commitment to patients, the nursing department, and the community in which we serve, that I feel Laura Johnson is deserving of the Nightingale Award."

Meet Jim Furness, RN, Nightingale Nursing Award nominee, who was nominated because: "When you ask folks at Johnson Memorial about Jim's skills as an RN it may take you a while to get an answer. First, people like to talk about the character that he is, the things he says that are funny, the smiles he hands out like candy, his lighthouse of a personality shining warmly in a stormy cold emergency department full of anxious patients. Patients and staff alike will regale you with tales of the time Jim did this for their elderly father or that for their sick daughter. Eventually they will get around to Jim's quick, thorough, and efficient nursing skills, but only after they've finished bloviating about his skills as a human being."
