Andrew Lobbestael from WJE presented on an interesting Roof Collapse investigation. Andrew is a Lawrence Tech alumni with a background in Civil Engineering and Architecture. He shared his experience and the lessons he learned with our chapter during his time here. These are a few of the lessons he brought up: 1) Don't cut structural members to fit a garage door! 2) Fundamentals are important 3) Civil Engineers have many opportunities 4) Make rational arguments. In conclusion, Andrew's last point was about developing a rational opinion. "You may never investigate a roof collapse, but... -Convince a contractor to address a field condition that does not match your design. -Defend your design approach to your client when value engineering has been utilized -Justify a new design philosophy."
This is a reminder that we have a speaker coming to our general meeting tomorrow at 1:00pm in E101. Hope to see you all there!!!!
