June 2017
Lots of fun for the past two weeks at SMYC. Hopefully, you've had a chance to enjoy some of these moments.
Flag Raising Ceremony
What a great day it turned out to be yesterday. Our new flagpole went up on Saturday and an impromptu gathering was announced for Monday. In true SMYC passion and style, approximately 100 people showed up to watch the ceremony. Thank you to all who came down for the event and sorry about the short notice to those who couldn't make it. Our Commodore, Jon Haag, gave a short speech as we honored our fallen heroes. Jill Kotarak Gestwicki played patriotic music on her saxophone while two of our young members of the community, Jerica Kotarak and McCoy Swanson, who are going into the military were on hand to raise the American flag as the Color Guard looked on. With the help of veterans, Tom Billingsley and Mike Herrington, we then raised the POW flag and all branches of the service flags while our veterans of those branches stepped forward to help with the attachment of their own branch. It was a very moving experience with tears, hugs, and many rounds of applause.

Our new flagpole is up and it’s beautiful! We’re having an impromptu flag raising ceremony on Memorial Day, Monday, 5/29/2017 @ 12pm. SMYC Clubhouse/bar opens @ 11am. We’d like to have as many SMYC vets participate in raising the flag. If you can, wear something that tells us what part of the armed services you served in. Instead of after the ceremony, we're going to have a luncheon prior to the flag raising at 12pm to give the color guard time to make it down from a previous engagement. Jill Gestwicki will be playing her saxophone with patriotic tunes while each of the branches of service flags and the GIANT US flag is raised. If you have service memorabilia you'd like to display inside of the Clubhouse for the day, please bring it down. Pictured is a WWI navy uniform as part of the current display.
