Technique Tuesday: Single leg progressions. ***Single leg variations are utilized to strengthen the legs individually, eliminating any tendency to compensate for a weaker leg.*** 1. Step Ups: This movement is great for single leg strength. This exercise is knee friendly and strengthens the legs individually, helping to correct strength imbalances. Make sure the step is appropriate for your height. 2. Split Squats: This movement stresses the front leg in the split squat position. It is a regression to the lunge because you do not have to worry about placing your foot at the correct spot with each step. This can be loaded with dumbbells or a kettle bell. 3. Reverse lunges: This movement is a progression from the split squat. It offers a greater challenge due to the transfer of weight while stepping backward and forward each repetition. Use kettle bells or dumbbells to load this exercise. 4. Walking Lunges: This is the most challenging of the 4 movements. It will take practice to memorize the length in stride while transferring load each step. This is a great single leg exercise that will help strengthen each leg individually while providing a conditioning effect do to the intensity of the exercise. Kettle bells or dumbbells can be used.
