In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. Again this year, communities across the United States will come together during National Police Week—May 14-20—to honor and remember those law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as the family members, friends and fellow officers they left behind. This year, the names of 394 officers killed in the line of duty are being added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC. These 394 officers include 143 officers who were killed during 2016, plus 251 officers who died in previous years but whose stories of sacrifice had been lost to history until now. Join the City of Somerset and the Somerset Police Department as we remember all those that have given their lives in the line of duty. We also want to recognize the brave men and women that continue to serve our community and walk the thin blue line.

PUBLIC NOTICE: The City received information on Friday, May 5th, that natural gas distribution lines were dangerously accessed in highly populated areas to remove natural gas samples without the City or its Natural Gas Company’s knowledge. Based on information received, it appears that in February of 2016, dangerous quantities of natural gas were removed as “samples” either by breaking into transmission and/or distribution lines within the City limits, some of which occurred inside homes and/or commercial businesses, or by illegally accessing valves on the City’s gas meters, both serious violations of natural gas safety regulations and standards. These improper actions occurred in the vicinity of Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, the business district of Highway 27, and Clifty Road. The safety, health, and welfare of our citizens and customers were endangered by this activity, risking the lives and properties of several thousand people. When the information was received by the City late Friday, the Mayor immediately ordered City Gas Technicians to check the City’s lines and gas meters in the affected areas to ensure no detectable leaks or abnormalities were present. While no irregularities were located on Friday evening, we will continue to examine the identified areas carefully to ensure that the safety and welfare of the public is not further compromised by third parties. The City would like to alert any and all customers that may have been approached for collection of “samples” in February 2016, that the collection was not in any manner authorized or condoned by the City of Somerset Natural Gas Company, and that property owners that suspect some of these samples of natural gas were taken on their side of the gas meter should contact a properly licensed natural gas technician of their choice to ensure gas lines and/or hook-ups located on their property were not damaged or compromised in any manner. All information regarding this activity has been reported to proper investigative and regulatory authorities including safety inspectors for the state Public Service Commission (PSC). The safety and well being of our citizens and customers is of the upmost importance, and the public’s safety will continue to be the main focus of the City of Somerset.
