Kingston Hill Academy is proposing drastic cuts in our FY17 budget to reflect what had been messaged to us as a “worst case scenario”: Governor Gina Raimondo’s $355 cut per charter student for FY17. Then, just 14 business days before our FY 17 budget was due to RIDE, we learned that the Governor’s proposal had been rejected and countered with H7454, which could come at an additional $50,000 cut for KHA on top of the Governor’s $75,000 recommendation. As everything stands right now, the total impact for Kingston Hill Academy will be approximately a $125,000 cut for FY17. This number would fluctuate depending on the districts our students ultimately come from. Of the 18 independent charters in the Rhode Island League of Charter Schools, 14 of them will be cut less than $355 per student with H7454. It is only The Greene School, Kingston Hill Academy, New England Laborer’s Career Academy and The Compass School that stand to be so severely impacted. Governor Raimondo’s team determined that $355 per student of charter school tuition was an equitable amount for districts to withhold. At the currently proposed rate (7%), with H7454, North Kingstown would be entitled to withhold $800. South Kingstown would be able to keep $1100 PER STUDENT. Why are the Washington County charters being targeted while the other 14 League of Charter Schools members benefit from H7454? Please make every effort to attend tonight’s meeting at 7:00pm at KHA regarding this critical issue and what we can do about it!

Mattiello says Raimondo request for additional school construction funds not in budget

As many of you may know, the budget for education in the state of Rhode Island was presented just a couple of days ago at the State House. http://www.providencejournal.com/news/20160607/raimondos-flat-fee-plan-to-help-districts-pay-for-charter-schools-is-out-lawmakers-say It includes a surprising and substantial cut to charter schools, especially those in South County (KHA and Compass). Given this budget crisis, Kingston Hill Academy has had to propose substantial cuts to staff and other areas. We would like to add this topic to the SIT meeting already scheduled for Monday at 7pm at KHA, so parents are aware of the severe impact the decisions being made at the state house are having on KHA and other charters. Steve Nardelli, our Board President, and Timothy Groves, the Executive Director of the RI League of Charter Schools, are planning on attending to discuss this emergency situation. We want our parents to be informed and have the opportunity to voice their concerns to state representatives who will be voting. At the meeting, we will have the most updated information and specific steps that each of us can do to support KHA during this critical time. Please let us know if you plan on attending. We understand this is last minute (as the budget was just announced), but please make every effort to attend this meeting. We do not have much time before this budget will be voted on. The Compass School will also be sending out communication on this matter shortly. Thank you for all your support!
