Hey, Brooklyn—#YaddoArtist John Newman’s show “Between the Literal and the Nonsensical, Sculptures and Drawings, 1982-2017” opened this week. On view through Feb. 11 at Safe Gallery, the show includes a new series of 65 (one for each year of his life!) drawings entitled “Developing Old Negatives."
#YaddoArtist Ayad Akhtar's essay—adapted from his speech accepting the Steinberg Playwright Award—offers a rumination on the salve of art in troubled times: “In a world increasingly lost to virtuality and unreality—the theater points to an antidote.”
NYC friends: Celebrate the launch of “It Occurs to Me That I Am America,” next Tuesday (Jan. 16) at the Strand Bookstore, with #YaddoWriters Susan Minot, Michael Cunningham, and James Hannaham as well as artist Eric Fischl in conversation with the book’s editor and Yaddo board member Jonathan Santlofer. Congrats to the #YaddoArtists whose work received 2018 Golden Globe nominations: André Aciman, whose novel “Call Me by Your Name” was adapted into a film; Dee Rees, whose adaption of Hillary Jordan's Mudbound received two nominations; and Chris Kraus, whose novel “I Love Dick” was adapted into TV series starring Kevin Bacon. Kudos!
Great news for #YaddoArtist Alison S.M. Kobayashi, whose one-woman show Say Something Bunny received rave reviews, and now has been extended through April. The show sold out for seven months, so best hop to those tickets: https://saysomethingbunny.com/.
#YaddoArtist Hava Kohav Beller’s documentary “In the Land of Pomegranates” is generating great buzz, including a mention in “New York” magazine’s must-see list. The film follows a group of young Israelis and Palestinians to a retreat called “Vacation from War,” as they face an ancient challenge with urgent implications. Opens this Friday (Jan. 5) at Lincoln Plaza.
