LOCATION: The Studio Part 1 of the 2018 Winter Conservation Series. Roger Harris of the Oceanic Society will tell us about these conservation success stories. Co-sponsored by the Oceanic Society. Cost: $15 per ticket, $35 for the 2018 MAGC Conservation Series Register Now: Single Event or Entire Series One of the world’s great wildlife areas lies immediately off of our Marin County coast. Fully a quarter of the seabirds born in California hatch from the vast rookeries of the Farallon Islands, including the iconic Tufted Puffin and half the world’s population of the Ashy Storm-Petrel. More species of marine mammals can be seen on a day boat trip into the Gulf than practically any place else. Grey Whales migrate through, while one of the world’s largest concentrations of the largest of all mammals, the endangered Blue Whale, feeds in these rich waters. The largest sea turtle, the critically endangered Leatherback, frequents the Gulf on occasion as do Killer Whales and Great White Sharks. The social history is equally fascinating. Over 200 years passed from when the first Europeans sailed past the Farallones to when they finally sailed into the great port of San Francisco. Before chicken farms were in Petaluma, seabird eggs were harvested from the islands. More recently, the islands have seen spectacular recoveries of Common Murres, Northern Fur Seals, and Northern Elephant Seals.

Presentation followed by wine reception Free admission; registration required Join us for a special presentation by Richard Kennedy, RLA, lead designer for the Presidio Tunnel Tops parklands, in conjunction with the exhibition, “Presidio Tunnel Tops: San Francisco Like you’ve Never Seen it Before” in The Studio at the Marin Art & Garden Center. Twenty-five years ago, Bay Area leaders, urban planners, and citizens were faced with replacing seismically unsafe Doyle Drive that divided the Presidio. Thanks to the vision of Michael Painter, the elegant at-grade Presidio Parkway is nearly complete, creating 14 acres of new Presidio parkland above two tunnels – and allowing the Presidio’s waterfront to be reconnected to its historic core. The exhibition, featuring renderings, models and video, traces the genesis of the design for these new parklands in one of the most stunning locations in the world. Beginning with a request for proposals from design firms around the world, this complex project has been developed through in-depth consultation with subject specialists and input from the public. James Corner Field Operations – the firm behind New York’s High Line – was selected as the lead designer in 2014. For the next year, staff engaged in a public outreach effort that helped shape the design. Groundbreaking is anticipated in 2018. Landscape architect Richard Kennedy, who heads the San Francisco design offices of Field Operations, will describe the design process for this ambitious and unprecedented project, and the input received from the community that helped shape the design. The new parkland includes a significant area devoted to a natural playground, called “Playscape.” In it, old and new ways of play are brought together in a dynamic exploration of the natural landscape by the San Francisco Bay. The Presidio Tunnel Tops will be a destination where visitors can connect with nature, enjoy the outdoors, and be inspired by 360-degree views. For its Marin neighbors, it will create a new view of the Golden Gate, offering recreational opportunities for families and enlivening the journey downtown. In short, it will be a welcoming place for all. This talk is open to the public and admission is free, but registration is required and seating is limited. The presentation will be followed by a wine reception and an opportunity to take a closer look at the exhibition. This exhibition and special lecture are presented through the generosity of the Presidio Trust and with the participation of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. For more information about the Presidio Tunnel Tops, go to www.PresidioTunnelTops.org.

DATE: 01-27-2018 TIME: 9:30 am - 12:30 pm LOCATION: The Studio The American Garden School was created to address a growing need in the U.S. for quality garden education. Many of us do not have the time or desire to commit to a formal series of horticulture-based classes at a university, yet wish to gain quality education to better our landscapes, covert our lawns, or develop a kitchen garden. Our goal is to be the go-to garden school for comprehensive, quality, tested and fun garden education for homeowners, garden enthusiasts, landscape practitioners, school gardens and very small farmers. Our courses are designed to help you generate a successful and beautiful garden, with themes pertinent to the West such as drought tolerance, ecology, sustainable practices, and time saving. We believe in systems, efficiency, technology, science based practices, and most importantly, that a garden should bring you joy. These intensive courses are a remarkable opportunity to learn practical and tested methods for creating successful gardens. Two-time Chelsea Flower Show gold medal winner, educator and renowned horticulturist and designer Kate Frey and local landscape manager and designer, Christa Moné, will share their expertise developed over many years in Northern California and internationally. Kate and Christa bring a wealth of information in educating people on how to create gardens that are remarkably beautiful, healthy, productive creative and efficient to care for. The New California Garden in a Fire-Prone Landscape This course is what all Californians have been yearning for: concepts that inspire us to move past the routine landscape and interact with our gardens, think environmentally and re-imagine the lawn. We seek to embrace our localities, and modern lifestyles! Our gardens should be places of pleasure, inspiration and life. A successful, thriving garden doesn’t occur from one method, they are developed from the application and interaction of many together. This intensive, practical course will present comprehensive information on the many horticultural principles and practices necessary to create beautiful, efficient, ecologically friendly, and locally appropriate gardens- including fire-safe. Morning coffee and pastries will be served
