Follow & share your experience! #FortStanwix #OriskanySHS #SteubenSHS Come visit this one of a kind National Park in downtown Rome, NY! For thousands of years the ancient trail that connects the Mohawk River and Wood Creek served as a vital link for those traveling between the Atlantic Ocean and Lake Ontario. This well-worn route through Oneida Indian territory carried goods and news, as well as diseases, to others far away. When Europeans arrived, they named this trail the Oneida Carrying Place and inaugurated a significant period in American history in which Fort Stanwix would play a vital role.

#FortStanwix #FortFactFriday Modern-day State Route 69, which begins on the western end of the Oneida Carry in Rome, has actually been around since before the War of 1812- it was originally a government road linking the growing city of Rome to Fort Ontario in Oswego, NY. Another road (modern day State Route 13) branched off it from the village of Camden to connect it to the naval installation at Sackett’s Harbor. Both roads are shown on old maps of the area as simply ‘Military Highways.’ #RomeNY #FunFactFriday
