British author J.K. Rowling went from single welfare mom to best-selling author to billionaire philanthropist. In 1993, Joanne Rowling was a struggling single mother on welfare in Edinburgh, Scotland, where she had moved from England following her separation from her husband, to live close to her sister. She had already finished the first three chapters of her first Harry Potter book, but she fell into depression and contemplated suicide. Still she kept writing about wizards and muggles, often in cafes because taking her baby out for a walk was the best way to help her fall asleep. When she submitted her first Harry Potter manuscript to 12 publishers, all of them rejected it. But she persisted. Rowling’s first book was finally accepted and published in 1997, and by 2000, Rowling had four Harry Potter books in print, and sales were phenomenal. The Harry Potter books became hugely successful films, with Rowling assisting in the script writing for several of the films and reviewing all of the scripts. Rowling stipulated that all of the films be shot in Britain with all-British casts. Harry Potter is now a global brand worth several billion dollars. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Rowling credited the success of the Harry Potter series to her mother, who had died. Rowling, who remarried in 2001, is heavily involved in philanthropy. She established a charitable trust in 2000, which aids children, single-parent families, and multiple sclerosis research. She is also president of the Gingerbread charity, which helps one-parent families. Reaching out to help others is natural for Rowling, who wrote in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: "We are only as strong as we are united."
