The good news? My work has never been better…The bad news? It’s leaving me little time for time for Facebook updates and fishing. It’s a good problem to have and the pictures customers have been sharing of fish caught on my work reminds me why I love doing this so much. I'm proud to show off my new, professionally designed website! Thanks to the hard work of my friend and designer Krista Feierabend, she was able to take my ideas and put together a user-friendly site that better showcases my work. Some of the highlights include: enhanced photo galleries, better mobile viewing, and a News/Events section that will include reviews of recent builds, pictures, and promotions throughout the year. I’ll be at Pelagic Outfitters this Saturday with blanks and rods for the grand opening of their new home, a 4,000 square foot store on Montauk Highway in Lindenhurst. The shop has anything you could want for offshore fishing, along with apparel, custom rigging, and a wide selection of rods and reel. Stop down between 8:00am to 4:00pm to say hello and check out one of the nicest shops on the island! I recently finished a beautiful CTS Jig & Pop build for the guys that I delivered last week. Starting on a SeaMaster 250-450gr blank, the rod features Fuji Silicon Carbide K guides, polished seat, shaped grips and a graphite gimbal. The wrap is a shaded 6 diamond, with more subtle black wraps and neon green trim on the guides. Throw on a Stella, grab your favorite stick bait and this beauty is ready for some topwater bluefin! One minute you’re working on Christmas orders, the next you’re halfway through the winter wondering where the last two months went. While the Facebook page has been quiet recently, I’ve been keeping busy with a variety of builds and repairs, helping to do my part in making sure the 2017 season is a great one for local anglers. I also want to say thank you to everyone who stopped by the Ward Melville Fishing Club Fundraiser and Expo this weekend to say hello (and wish me a Happy Birthday). Getting to see customers past and present and the fish they’ve caught on my rods is the fuel that keeps me going every day, so keep them coming! These pictures are some of my favorite builds since my last post, including a deep drop swordfish rod, handles featuring new cork/burl products I’m using, and a couple of “bright” wraps. There are also some examples of basic builds, which I’m equally as happy to make for anglers who want clean, functional rods. It’s been a busy fall in the shop, with “variety is the spice of life” being the central theme. From simple surf and inshore builds to colorful wraps and custom handles, a great mix of rods have left the shop over the past two months. A quick rundown of my favorite builds includes surf rods, inshore rods, and offshore jigging rods from manufacturers like: Lamiglas, RodGeeks, Seeker, and Century. While each build is certainly deserving of its own update, samples and descriptions of each are included in the pictures below. I’m currently booking builds for March/April of 2017. A few months ago, I had the pleasure of working with Lamiglas on reworking the famed GSB1201M and GSB1321M models to better match the original models that helped make them into the "standard issue" custom rod for thousands of surfcasters over the past 3 decades. The blanks changed roughly 15 years ago, with newer versions being softer/slower than the older models and lacking the punch with bigger plugs, eels, and bucktails. In an effort to come up with something as close as possible to the original, I sent them a pair of old run blanks to base the new models off of and I’m happy to say the new rods will be offered along with the current production, with the “Old School” designation attached to them. I built a pair for myself and without a doubt, they fish very closely to the original versions and are better in some aspects. The GSB1321M was done with an Infinity style rear grip, polished Fuji DNPSD reel seat, and a shaped hypalon foregrip. Fuji K series Alconite guides with black frames and black overwraps tone down the orange color in the wraps while still leaving some “pop” for those late nights when my eyes start getting heavy. The GSB1201M starts with a cork tape rear grip, polished Fuji DNPSD reel seat, and a shaped two tone cork fore grip. I used Titanium frame Fuji K guides with Alconite inserts (roughly 40% lighter than the standard steel frames) in a modified NGC layout, making this rod perfectly balanced with a Van Staal 250 and an absolute pleasure to fish all night with.
