The Art Loft
Description
Our mission is to enrich our local community through arts & education. We aim to make art accessible to everyone regardless of income, age, or experience. The Art Loft is a community art center that makes art accessible to everyone, no matter their ability, age, or income. We aim to inspire everyone to unleash their inner artist and flex their creative muscles on a regular basis.
We are conveniently located in the heart of the Rockland arts center. The Art Loft is a great place to meet and make and new creative friends.
Although there are many galleries, museums and art centers in Rockland, the Art Loft fills a different need. We are a social art club of sorts. A place to visit regularly to Create, Connect, Learn and Live!

facebook.comAnother fun Paint Night at the Art Loft!
Painting the sky has fascinated mankind since cave painting days. In this workshop, we will take easy-to-work-with everyday materials to create dramatic but simple-to-produce renditions of the sky, be it day, night, full of stars, or full of the moon. Acrylic paints are a fun medium to express yourself, and with Frieda’s guidance, you can find a way to create effects that you didn’t think possible. Using paper as a background, we will apply paints with brush, palette knives, brayers (printing rollers), credit cards (yes!) and anything else you can think of to create a result you’ll love. We’ll start with some practice paper and finish with a piece worthy of framing. $35 All materials provided. All levels welcome. Please register in advance online at https://artloftrockland.org/event/paint-the-sky-2/

We love being in Rockland!
Our inner spirit is indomitable. Even when we ignore our intuition, our soul remains steadfast, indomitable, and everlasting; calling us to our highest path; igniting our imagination and desire. We begin this workshop with exercises to quiet the left brain, get our creativity flowing, and connect with our dreams and desires. And then, with all this rich information and inspiration, I will gently introduce you to the canvas where we will create a dream painting using a fun 4-step process (I use it for all my paintings!) Keep it abstract or create a mandala, butterfly, or other focal image expressive of your dream with my guidance and support. There is no pressure to “complete” your art because it is all about the process, not the product. The painting is a supportive, playful, meditative experience which will leave you feeling refreshed and renewed, aligned and connected with your indomitable soul. This workshop will loosen left-brain restrictions, free your creative mind, connect you to your inner guidance, and get you grounded and inspired! Workshop cost is $55. All materials will be provided. All levels welcome. No experience necessary. Register at https://artloftrockland.org/event/indomitable-soul-path-art-workshop/
Please join us for this intriguing gallery show at our next Art Walk gallery opening, November 3rd, from 5-8 pm. The show will be on display at the Art Loft through the month of November. Tension – The Work of Nanfei Wang Because of my travels between and within the United States, China, and Europe over the last decade, I have deepened my commitment in my work to exploring how changes in contemporary life affect individuals and their environments. The advances of contemporary civilization, particularly in China, dazzle us with constant change: gleaming new skyscrapers that replace temples and single-family residences; wide boulevards named after what were once foot trails or winding alleys; and high-speed trains speeding through once tranquil rural valleys. This kind of change leaves no society, no individual untouched. Modernization and urbanization has brought hope for a better life to hundreds of millions of people around the world. Still, sometimes there is disquiet, often suffered alone by people who find the rapid change surrounding them unsettling, perhaps even corrupting. As old cultures wane, some cling to the consolation they once found in them, creating a constant tension between the old and the new, the winners and the losers, the weak and the powerful. I find this constant push and pull fascinating, and a consistent theme in my art. Some people take change for granted; I don’t. Still, there are many different ways to confront it, including humor, which I employ. In June 2011, I established a studio on edge of Rockland Harbor in Rockland, Maine, moving there permanently in 2014. I live in a century-old New England federal-style house; its surroundings intrigue me and feed a strong sense of curiosity. The fog that envelops the house and a nearby lighthouse, the humid air, wormy apples, spring and summer flowers and even the lobster traps and sailboats captivate me. In summer, though a small town, it’s a city of strangers from around New England and the world: amazing and exciting. All this inspired a new series of paintings along my consistent theme. Maine’s beauty and serenity contrasts with the noise and constant bustle of Beijing; they are two completely different worlds, but both feed my sense of being an external “I” viewing the world, observing my surroundings and considering people’s lives. Both environments give rise to, perhaps, unreasonable feelings that I will continue to explore. I appreciate the hustle and bustle of Beijing, but Maine is a place where nature forms a dream world for me. Living in any one place provokes thoughts of another that I miss and love and that I can neither dismiss nor avoid. Seeing a lot makes me want to see more. My intent is clear. Nanfei Wang
