Congratulations to the nine fourth-year University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford students who were recently inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS). The GHHS recognizes students, residents and faculty who are exemplars of compassionate patient care and who serve as role models, mentors and leaders in medicine. GHHS members are peer-nominated and are the ones that others say they want taking care of their own family. The students who were welcomed into the society and received their GHHS pin by Dr. Errol Baptist, clinical professor of pediatrics and GHHS faculty mentor, were Joshua Baalman, Adam Bernardi, Aubrey Graham, Erin Hinckley, Genesis Nieves, Nelson Nwumeh, Charles Pierce, Leroy Seymour and Christina Tsai.

The University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford will soon have a new nanomedicine laboratory where researchers can pursue treatments for disabling conditions using innovative nanotechnology needed for discoveries at the smallest, molecular level. The lab will be a part of the Department of Biomedical Sciences and will be located on the UIC Health Sciences Campus-Rockford at 1601 Parkview Ave. Funding for research personnel, equipment and supplies for the laboratory will come from a $500,000 gift from The Blazer Foundation of Rockford and an additional matching grant from the University of Illinois College of Medicine Chicago of $150,000. This new lab is an outgrowth of the college's Regenerative Medicine and Disability Research Laboratory that opened in 2016 following a previous $3 million Blazer Foundation gift. Divya Bijukumar, Ph.D., research assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, will direct the new laboratory and continue to expand upon her research, which includes investigations for treatments of vision loss from diabetes and the disabling side effects of some joint implants. She'll be joined by Vishal Khatri, Ph.D., a researcher collaborator studying potential treatments for the digestive disease colitis. The new laboratory is expected to open in fall 2019.

MERIT

Jeff Weaver, a former marine and Department of Children and Family Services case worker, was telling his fellow VFW POST 2955 Roscoe, Illinois members how he works alongside University of Illinois College of Medicine’s Medical Evaluation Response Initiative Team (MERIT) Program. When he explained the impact MERIT has on the Stateline and surrounding communities, the members of the Roscoe VFW were amazed at the way MERIT staff advocates on behalf of the children and teens they serve. The Roscoe VFW worked together to apply for a grant through their national grant program for a $1,000 donation to MERIT -- what amazing way to help combat child abuse and neglect in our communities!
