100.9 FM WXIR, eXtreme Independent Radio is Rochester's Urban Alternative Station! Tune in for socially conscious urban talk, and alternative urban music. Mission:
The mission of WXIR-LP is to provide Rochester City residents with community-focused radio programming with youth outreach, as a focus.
WXIR-LP is a low power FM radio station on frequency 100.9 in Rochester, NY whose goal is to serve underrepresented communities through radio programming submitted by volunteer radio hosts and DJs. WXIR-LP is owned and operated through RCTV Media Center.
Goals:
• Democratize the local media landscape by giving a voice to un-represented or underrepresented members of our community
• Increase diversity of musical programming in our area
• Provide an educational media platform for issues-oriented information
• Provide a platform for our community’s youth to share their voice while learning critical communication skills
History:
After years of heavy restrictions that reduced opportunities for low power community stations to exist, President Obama, in 2011 signed the Local Community Radio Act, which paved the way for many community organizations to broadcast a diverse range of music, news and events to their communities. RCTV saw this as an opportunity to reach the underserved communities in Rochester and began the license application process in 2013. The FCC granted a construction license in 2014, and a broadcast license on April 4, 2016. WXIR began test broadcasting on February 29, 2016, and publicly launches on May 16th, 2016.
