Second Avenue Learning was founded in 2006 with a mission to harness digital and improve learning from K-12, to Higher Ed and on to Corporate. Second Avenue Learning does all the components of game design in-house which has proven to be very successful. Recently, the company relocated from the suburbs to downtown and has great things to say about the transition. Tory Van Voorhis, CEO, explained, “Rochester has a vibrant creative class, the suburbs were convenient, but the team was far from the creative energy.” She went on to say, “we needed a space that was innovative, that attracts talent and a place where our clients could come to.” The team also seems to appreciate being downtown. Noting that they feel part of the community and they have great connections to the local universities. They offer co-ops through Rochester Institute of Technology and have partnered with the Central Library of Rochester & Monroe County NY for a Safe to Be Smart program. The team emphasized that if they can keep some of the amazing talent base local after college, that would be a wonderful thing. After talking to more members of the team, many pointed out a love for the culture downtown, local restaurants and coffee shops and of course the food trucks at Midtown EATS! It’s become a new tradition that every day a bunch of the team members go for a walk around downtown. “They get to see the city come to life again which is such a great thing”, Tory added.
