I’m old and gray and do not shine As once when I was new. I’ve been in many places and Had many friends, it’s true. When I was young my value high, In silver worth my weight, Invited to a party, quite A stir I could create. Partook in feasts and grand affairs, Set regal at the table, Dined with the rich, who put on airs. Was humble as was able. Life’s given me some knocks and nicks. My surface shows the years. Have fallen for a crook’s ole tricks, Felt shoved aside with tears. As you hold me in your hand, I know you saw some shine Or you would not have picked me up And shared with me your time. With you dear friend, sugar and cream A cup of hot black tea, I feel my surface shine again, With you I can be me. Please answer my enquiry now Reread my story true, Am I a worn old silver spoon Or am I really you? ~Krista Cary Martenson~ Third Place Winner Earlene Grey Tea Poetry Contest Winner
