Home to about 19,000 residents, the City of Plattsburgh is located on Lake Champlain in the northeast part of New York State. The City of Plattsburgh is located on Lake Champlain in the northeast part of New York State about 20 miles south of the Canadian Border. To the west of Plattsburgh sits 6.1 million acres of land called the Adirondack Park which contains the famous Adirondack Mountains. There are over one hundred summits, ranging from under 1,200 to over 5,000 feet in altitude.

Plattsburgh was founded by Zephaniah Platt in 1785.  Plattsburgh has been the site of a number of historical events.  These events include the Revolutionary War's Battle of Valcour Island and the War of 1812's Battle of Plattsburgh.

Plattsburgh is tied to a number of famous and infamous people. The actor Jean Arthur was born here in 1900, John Henry Hopkins who was a former rector of Plattsburgh's Trinity Episcopal Church is the author of the Christmas hymn "We Three Kings of Orient Are,” and architect John Russell Pope who designed the Jefferson Memorial also is the architect who designed Plattsburgh's City Hall.

The current mayor of Plattsburgh is James E Calnon.  Plattsburgh is the home to approximately 19,000 people.

City-Wide Garage Sale Weekend

The City of Plattsburgh will host a city-wide garage-sale weekend Saturday, July 1 and Sunday, July 2. For a $5 donation to First Weekends, a not-for-profit organization that provides a safe, free venue for artists to perform in downtown Plattsburgh, residents will get their garage sale address added to a city-wide map that First Weekends personnel will distribute to shoppers. Advertising and promotion, including social media, will be handled out of the office of Sandra Geddes, promotions/events coordinator for the City of Plattsburgh. “Many communities host this type of event and with much success,” Geddes said. “Whether city residents are hosting or shopping, it’s a great way to engage all city residents.” Additional details will be forthcoming. Lt. Governor Hochul visited City Hall today to announce the winning projects selected for the City's #DowntownRevitalization Intiative. "Through the DRI, Plattsburgh will improve its riverfront access, invite development of its waterfront district and improve the pedestrian experience, taking advantage of its location in the Adirondacks and its unique historical significance to build its strength as a tourist destination and a great community for young people raising a family."
