FREE EVENT: The public is invited to attend a lecture about a famous jam session that took place at Sun Recording Studios in Memphis in late 1956. The men who were a part of that session are now referred to as The Million Dollar Quartet. The lecture will also address the music that came out of Memphis and Nashville. This lecture is meant to be a preface to the Friday night show, The Million Dollar Quartet. Who were the musicians? Johnny Cash, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins. But just like everything in our world, the music of each of these individual men evolved from “somewhere”. Their music did not just “appear” overnight. Their music was a product of everything that had happened in their past – their parents, their churches, the towns they lived in, scrapes with the law, the girls they dated. Guest speaker for the evening is Travis Stimeling, WVU School of Music. (PhD, musicology) who is assistant professor of music history and director of the WVU Bluegrass Band. A scholar of commercial country and Appalachian traditional music, he recently edited The Country Music Reader (Oxford University Press, 2015), an anthology of primary source readings in country music history spanning the late nineteenth century to the present, and is the author of Cosmic Cowboys and New Hicks: The Countercultural Sounds of Austin's Progressive Country Music Scene (Oxford University Press, 2011), which earned an American Musicological Society Publication Subvention. He has published articles in such journals as American Music, Popular Music, Popular Music and Society, and Journal of Popular Music Studies, among others. He also served as a Senior Editor for The Grove Dictionary of American Music, 2nd ed. Admission is free, but the Theatre requests that you call 304.422.PLAY to make your reservation.
