BISBEE. Ord22-1 Veronica gently turned the wheel of her Mercedes Benz Cabrio, gliding onto the ramp for the exit towards Bisbee. She glanced in the rearview mirror to make sure the black Plymouth Sundance that carried her two body guards turned as well. If Richard had been on duty she wouldn't have bothered with the glance. He wouldn't lose her. These guards she wasn't so sure about. They were disciplined and well trained but they were also, quite frankly, young. Still, there was no anticipation of danger on this trip. Bisbee wasn't a place that held much threat in her opinion and Richard had agreed. It was an old mining town near the Mexican border where her friends had bought a fixer upper Victorian and turned the dilapidated structure into a fine home. Ben was a natural handyman. If it could be screwed, sawed, hammered, or nailed he could fix it. Jenny was much less handy in a practical sense but she was the one with vision. She appreciated the art of home decor. She knew just how to change a room to bring out it's personality. Ben and Jenny were the ones who had decorated her Victorian. She loved the blue and white Jenny had chosen for it and the care with which Ben had painted. On the radio, the song Won't Get Fooled Again ended. She knew Roger Daltrey, one of the members of The Who personally. She had watched him perform Won't Get Fooled Again many a time. The song that started on the radio was the Final Countdown. She didn't know any of Europe personally but she did like the song. She sang along with the music as she passed the red and white gas station that marked the entrance of Bisbee. It had changed ownership several times over the years and she didn't bother trying to keep track of which logo it was currently under. Nothing much seemed to change about it. There were twelve pumps outside. One which sold Diesel. Advertisements for discounted soda, hot dogs, and other road food covered the gas station windows. There were signs claiming the "Lowest Prices of Cigarettes Allowed by the State" along with a few named brands and the accompanying prices. The gas station was almost empty. She glanced at her fuel gauge. She was at half a tank. No need to stop now. She took in a deep breath, enjoying the smells of the air as she drove into the heart of Bisbee. It was the smell of nature. These smells were the reason she loved to drive with an open top. As she turned down Ben and Jenny's street, she could smell meat grilling. She wondered if Ben was doing the cooking himself or if he had enlisted the help of other visiting friends and relatives. She parked on the curb outside of their home. There were a dozen cars parked on the street around her. Ben and Jenny had recently announced that they were expecting their first child and the party was a gender reveal. Veronica followed the walkway to the front door and knocked. Jenny answered, giving her a broad smile. She was beautiful despite the slight weightshe had gained from her pregnancy. Her face was fuller. Shining. Her belly had a small bump but otherwise she maintained her sensual hour glass figure. "I'm so glad you could come," Jenny said reaching out to hug her. "I brought you this. For the baby," Veronica said. "Oh, you didn't need to do that," Jenny said taking the envelope Veronica held out to her. "It's nothing," Veronica said smiling. She hadn't thanked Ben and Jenny for their help on her house nor had she paid them for any of the supplies they had bought. They didn't expect it, of course, but the check she'd made out and given them as a gift for the baby was a start at repaying their kindness. "Come on in," Jenny said. She led Veronica through the front hallway and into the formal living room. Veronica's eyes immediately went to the enormous hanging chandelier. "Is that new?" she asked. "Yes, Ben just installed it last month. I've been begging him for one. It really lights up the stained glass," Jenny said indicating the decorative panels in the double-hung windows. "That is beautiful," Veronica agreed. "I really think you should consider replacing your windows. I'm just in love with mine," Jenny said. Veronica's home had come with beveled windows with geometric designs in steel. Veronica saw the appeal of adding stained glass for color but she liked the shimmer of her current windows too much to replace them. For the moment at least. Veronica lowered herself onto one of the settees upholstered in a flower pattern and took the coffee that Jenny offered her. The women around her chatted but she couldn't keep her mind on the conversation. She was too busy thinking about her plans for after the party. Her heart beat fast as she thought about Atse. She was going to Canyon de Chelly once she left Ben and Jenny's. She was going to find Atse. She kept playing through her mind what she wanted to say. She would tell him she knew there was no other woman. She knew he had lied for reasons she didn't fully understand. She didn't care about that though. She wanted him back and there was no force in heaven or hell that was going to prevent her from returning to him, despite what he thought he wanted. She loved Nothing else mattered. "Steaks are up," Ben called from the back of the house. To be continued.
