facebook.comOCTOBER ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT MARSHA MASSEY "No Excuses!" 1. When and why did you start at Panhandle Crossfit? I started the first week in September after getting a cancer free report from my team of doctors at Emory University hospital. I have been fighting Stage IV Melanoma for 3 years. It has been the battle of my life. I had to watch my husband fight this same battle (Stage IV Melanoma)....courageously I might add. My children and I lost our “Hero” in 2014. My life has never been the same since. I have constant fear, worry, and major anxiety that the cancer (Melanoma) will come back. I needed a way to cope with all that I have been through. My friend Angel, who has been with me through my entire cancer journey, talked me into joining. She thought it would be good for me mentally and physically. 2. What is your favorite WOD or movement(s) and what is your favorite activity outside of CrossFit? At this moment, I can’t say that I have a favorite WOD (LOL!), remember it has only been a month. I guess I would say my favorite movement would be the KB Swings and maybe the squats....maybe!! This makes me laugh just thinking about it. I have never been an athlete type. However, in this short period of time I can already feel the difference in my strength. But....I’m not going to lie. It is so incredibly hard for me. I have been on treatments for 2 years, so I have had very little exercise. Outside of CrossFit, I love to cook and watch college football with my boys. I also love to watch my boys play their team sports at school. 3. What words of encouragement/advice would you give to new members? You have to try it!! Don’t think about it. Lord, don’t think about it. It may look intimidating at first, but I can promise you that the members and coaches are some of the most genuine and welcoming people you will ever meet. I have to say that is one thing I love about PCF is that nobody makes me feel embarrassed and for that I am grateful. You are here to be your best SELF, so remember to let others help and support you. Also, remember that everything is scalable and that it is more than just working out. The focus is on improving your ability to perform outside of CrossFit. Everybody keeps you motivated to do your best!!! 4. Who/what inspires you the most? My children, they are my biggest inspiration. I want to be the strongest and healthiest mom that I know how to be for them. They encourage me every day to stay strong even when its tough. They lift me up when I am down and they give me the courage to fight during the toughest of times. My children are truly AMAZING!!! They have been through more than any children should ever have go through. I am inspired DAILY!!! I also feel inspired to come to PCF because of all the effort everybody puts in at this place. It is a place where I can be myself, work out, be healthy and have a better balance in my life. 5. How has Panhandle CrossFit affected your life? It has made me feel stronger mentally and physically. I have more energy to tackle the every day struggles that come my way. I have just recently turned 50 years old and know that I have a long road ahead of me, but I know God is right beside me all the way. Just in this short time I have this quiet confidence; a certainty that wasn’t there before. It’s not about losing weight for me, but more about mentally staying positive for me and my children. 6. What is your favorite thing about Panhandle CrossFit? My favorite thing about PCF are the people that I have met. It’s exactly what I needed to feel better about myself. Everybody is so encouraging and supportive. It’s really hard, but its fun, too!! I love the way I feel when I am done....getting into my car. Ha ha! Seriously, the amazing people here who lift me up along the way are the real bonus to PCF. They are incredible and supportive. Also, Kirstie has been AMAZING!! She gives me great advice and makes me want to work harder. I have never been athletic, I’m not good at Sports but since I’ve joined PCF Kirstie makes me feel like I can do it. Even though I’m not the fastest or strongest, I’m determined to get better at it. Short Bio: I was born in Meridian, Mississippi, but have been raised in Panama City for most of my life. I am a second grade teacher at Northside Elementary and I have two AMAZING sons, William(16) and Jack(11). I also have a stepson, Trent(24) who I love very much. Being married to my husband of 13 years was the best part of my life. He gave me two beautiful, smart boys that will always remind me of him every day. In 2014, I was diagnosed with Stage IV Melanoma. My husband was also battling stage IV Melanoma at the same time. On June 12, 2014 our lives changed forever. My husband lost his battle with cancer. Sadly, my battle was just beginning. I have a team of surgeons, oncologists, and many more at Emory University Hospital that help to keep the cancer away. I was at MD Anderson for a while until my oncologist gave me no hope to live. Never give up Hope!!!! I can finally say that I am cancer free as of August 25, 2017. God has given my family a miracle!! I have learned to trust in God in a way I’ve never known before. My family has been blessed beyond what we deserve to have such amazing, loving, supportive families in our community and at home. We continued to find ourselves covered in God’s peace and love. I have learned the true essence of humility, generosity, and the incredible power of prayer.
