A community's downtown is a symbol of its economic health. Successful downtowns are a key element in industrial, commercial, and professional recruitment to the community.
Oskaloosa Main Street encompasses the Square with its iconic bandstand, as well as surrounding buildings and businesses. It is a tourist Attraction, a civic forum, and a community space. The pedestrian-friendly location allows for authentic experiences.
For almost three decades, Iowa's Main Street Communities have made a commitment to the long-term revitalization of their historic commercial districts. Oskaloosa is one of the original Iowa Main Street communities.
Each Main Street Iowa community receives thousands of dollars annually from the state in training and technical assistance. The state also provides and on-going annual investment for design assistance, business assistance, yearly consultations, and city-specific technical support.
The Main Street Four Point Approach offers a comprehensive and integrated strategy to commercial district revitalization using four key facets: Organization, Economic restructuring, Design, and Promotion.
Oskaloosa Main Street Volunteers are committed to improving the social and economic well-being of the community to capitalize on the unique assets and character of the district. We will continue to work with the state program to build strong partnerships, improve communication and provide new opportunities for continued success.

Oskaloosa is Surrounded by Lights On December 1, 2016, Mayor Krutzfeldt did a countdown at the Lighted Christmas Parade, and at 7 pm Oskaloosa became “Surrounded by Lights” on the beautiful Oskaloosa square. The square was adorned with greenery, bows, and white LED lights while the buildings were painted with colorful LED lights. “We are hearing many wonderful stories of those traveling to town and spending time at stores and restaurants,” stated Karen Hafner, Oskaloosa Main Street Director. The lights are turned on at 4 pm and off at 10:30 pm each evening. If you have not yet seen them, be sure to bring your family and friends up to the square during your Christmas festivities. The lights will remain on each night until early January. Hafner said, “Our fundraising goal for this project is $110,000. We have had some major support such as the Golden Goose Club and other local support. Pledge your support for the lights today – will you help fund the 50,000+ lights that are making Oskaloosa shine? Levels of giving include the following: Gold - $1,000, Red - $500, Green - $100, Blue - $250, White - $50. Any contribution personally or through a business would be appreciated!” Your donation can be tax deductible by making your donation to Mahaska FutureView, 222 1st Ave East, Oskaloosa, IA 52577. If you wish to itemize your donation as an advertising expense, please make check payable to the Oskaloosa Area Chamber, 222 1st Ave East, Oskaloosa, IA 52577.
