Join us for the presentation of the classic Rodgers & Hammerstein musical "South Pacific" Set in an island paradise during World War II, two parallel love stories are threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war. Nellie, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with a mature French planter, Emile. Nellie learns that the mother of his children was an island native and, unable to turn her back on the prejudices with which she was raised, refuses Emile's proposal of marriage. Meanwhile, the strapping Lt. Joe Cable denies himself the fulfillment of a future with an innocent Tonkinese girl with whom he's fallen in love out of the same fears that haunt Nellie. When Emile is recruited to accompany Joe on a dangerous mission that claims Joe's life, Nellie realizes that life is too short not to seize her own chance for happiness, thus confronting and conquering her prejudices. A little background on the Junior Theater Festival in Atlanta which OTHT's Youth group will be attending for the third year in 2018. The Festival is produced by iTheatrics out of New York city and sponsored by Music Theatre International, Disney Musicals and Playbill. The first two organizations license rights to produce musicals and Playbill produces programs for theatrical productions. JTF provides the opportunity for students, and adults to network with fellow performers, meet theater professionals and gain direction and positive feedback to improve their skills. There are a number of opportunities to perform outside the team competition including auditions for a part in a promotional choreography DVD produced in NYC, technical workshops and competition, teacher workshops, all star presentations, random selections for an impromptu musical presentation on the main stage and a lot more. I attended last year under the Professional Development Program independent of OTHT and was able to interact with Tony Award winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, event founder and producer, Tim McDonald, author Jodi Picoult, Director of Professional Development, Cindy Ripley, choreographer Michael Bobbitt, Kennedy Center director, Rosemary Newcott and Disney Theatrical Group president and producer Thomas Schumacher among others.
