Description
Tam O'Shanter is a beautiful 9-hole golf course operated by the Niles Park District. It is scenically situated on the North branch of the Chicago River. Historic Tam O’Shanter Golf Course can trace its roots all the way back to 1925 when Tam O’Shanter Country Club was one of the premier golf facilities in the country. The course was home to some of the richest tournaments of the 1940’s and 1950’s and hosted the best players in the world (check out some great shots from these tournaments in our photo section!). In 1973, as the property was slated for industrial development, the Niles Park District was able to purchase land north of Howard St. where the 9 Hole, Par 33 course remains today.
Niles Park District is proud to keep the rich tradition of Tam O’Shanter alive with fantastic playing conditions and an enjoyable layout for both beginning and seasoned golfers. The accompanying Tam Golf Learning Center is home to all our instructional programming, which is available year round thanks to our indoor putting green and chipping area, and full swing hitting stations.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who came out and enjoyed our 3rd Annual Junior Golf Games outing last week! Even though the weather felt more like October than August, golfers still had a blast out on the course and at our after party. Our 3rd Annual Junior Golf Games outing for players ages 3-13 is coming up on Friday August 4th! Sign up with friends or come make new ones at this super-fun, non-competitive event. Contests for participants to enjoy will be spread throughout the course and every player will recieve a golf prize pack. Register in advance at the Howard Leisure Center 847-967-6633.

After being closed for nearly 2 weeks due to flooding, the green flag flies again at Tam O'Shanter! We are back open for WALKERS ONLY today. Call us at 847-965-2344 to schedule a tee time.
If all goes well today, this should be our last flood update before welcoming golfers back to the course! The water is down, but we need one more day to clean up what the river left behind on holes 1 and 7. We are hoping to resume operations tomorrow (Tuesday 7/25), however the status of riding carts is uncertain at this time. Staff members will be able to provide updates on conditions beginning at 6:00am tomorrow. Our pro-shop will be open until 5pm this afternoon to take tee-time reservations for the rest of the week. UPDATE Saturday July 22nd. Evening storms have led to yet another round of flooding at Tam O'Shanter. We will remain closed through this weekend. Our pro-shop will open at 6:30am Monday morning to provide updates on course conditions and hopefully start taking tee time reservations for later in the week, provided we are able to establish a re-opening date. Thank you for your patience as the course recovers from one of the worst stretches of weather we have seen in quite some time. We hope to see you soon!
New day, but a familiar story at Tam O'Shanter... Approximately 1.5 inches of rain fell from the latest weather system to push through the area, raising river levels back over the bank. We are forced to remain closed Thursday 7/20 and likely much (if not all) of Friday 7/21. With periodic storms in the forecast over the coming days, we are unable to provide an estimated re-opening date at this time. Our pro-shop phone recording will continue to be updated every morning with current course conditions and a revised outlook. Reach us at 847-965-2344.
Tam O'Shanter will remain closed for one more day of clean up and turf repair. Weather permitting, we plan to open for walkers only by tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon. With storms in the forecast overnight, a fair amount of uncertainty remains in that outlook, but we're hoping for the best! We should know by 8am Thursday how the rest of the day will shape up. UPDATE: Tuesday, July 18. Tam O'Shanter remains closed today. The river is just about back within the banks, but clean up continues on lower areas of the course. Holes 1, 2, and 7 are focal points of our efforts today. We expect to remain shut down through at least tomorrow (Wednesday) morning. Our pro-shop phone recording will be updated by 10am with our outlook for Wednesday afternoon. We plan to begin taking tee time reservations for later in the week tomorrow morning. UPDATE: Sunday, July 16. Water levels are receding for the second time, but significant clean-up remains before we can resume normal operations. The golf course will remain closed today and Monday 7/17. We are still uncertain of a re-opening date, but hope to be back up and running mid-week.
