United Church on the Green, UCC: New Haven, CT
Description
"No matter who you are, no matter where you are on life's journey, you are invited and welcome here." We are a progressive Protestant Christian church, a member of the United Church of Christ (UCC). We have a long history. We were established 1742. Our meetinghouse was built in 1815. The Amistad Incident? Abolition of slavery? The 1970 Black Panther trials? Divestment in South Africa? United was there. And we believe God is still speaking to the world today... and we're trying to listen. We're definitely NOT a "The Bible says it. I believe it. That settles it." kind of church. Questions are encouraged. We've been "Open and Affirming" of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons since 1989. We are working with God to build a better future. We're trying to "connect the dots" to grow peace, justice, and compassion in the world. We're not interested in "saving souls" or "converting the heathen," but in being faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. God's love is for all.

facebook.comThis week's Scripture reading is Luke 14: 1 and 7-14. We invite you to read, pray, and ask yourself: Where in your life might you need to practice humility? Where might you need to practice boldness? What does it feel like to welcome others to your table? What does it feel like to be welcomed? Then join us at 10am this Sunday as together we seek answers to some of these questions. Stay afterwards for coffee and conversation. No matter who you are, no matter where you are on your journey, you are invited and welcome here at United Church on the Green in the heart of downtown New Haven.

"I wonder if this is possible with grown-ups, too. To forgive, to soften, to turn my heart back to the Living God. To be reminded that I have all I need to show love in this very moment. Every day. As long as it is called “today.”"

This week's scripture reading is Isaiah 58:9b-14 After reading it, we invite you to pray and reflect: Where do you see the yoke of oppression in our world? In your life? How do marginalization and violence harm both their victims and their perpetrators? What would it look like if our ancient ruins were rebuilt? How might God be calling you, and us, to be repairers of the breach? Join us at 10am this Sunday as we explore this scripture and how it touches our lives today. Stay afterwords for coffee and conversation. No matter who you are, no matter where you are on Life's journey, you are invited and welcome here.

"When immigrants live in your land with you, you must not cheat them. Any immigrant who lives with you must be treated as if they were one of your citizens. You must love them as yourself, because you were immigrants in the land of Egypt; I am the Lord your God." -- Leviticus 19:33-34 (CEB)
In Luke 12, Jesus says "Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division!" Could he have been talking about our world today? Join us at 10am this Sunday as we strive to move beyond division to discussion, from walls to bridges, from closed fists to outstretched hands. Stay afterwards for coffee and conversation. Remember, no matter who you are, no matter where you are on your life's journey, you are invited and welcome here. And...FREE PARKING on New Haven streets every Sunday!

Bible Gateway passage: Luke 12:32-40 - New Revised Standard Version
Join us for worship this Sunday at 10am, with refreshments and conversation to follow! Our reading will be Luke 12:32-40, in which God is portrayed as shepherd, parent, master, homeowner, newlywed, thief in the night, and Son of Man. How does each of these images speak to you (or not)? Which one do you prefer (or not)? What does each one ask of you, and what does each one offer?
