Today's Artifact of the Week is a personal-sized, cast iron grill. Just look how little it is! Excelsior Stove Works (later renamed Excelsior Manufacturing Co) was established by Giles F Filley in 1849. The company produced cast iron goods, primarily gem pans, up to the 1940s. The makers mark on these products often causes confusion, as they are marked "G F Filley" rather than the company name.

When the original settlers of New Braunfels came to Texas they brought their culture with them, including their religions. St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church was founded as soon as possible and the cornerstone of this beautiful church was laid in 1871.

What a wonderful day in New Braunfels history! On this day in 1954, the first HEB opened in town.

New Braunfels has had a wonderful history with local businesses, like Comaltex Insurance Agency Inc, since its founding in 1845. Come for a tour to learn about some of these local institutions.

Sometimes the artifacts in our collection are simply adorable. Today's Artifact of the Week is this group of small wooden figurines. They are marked on the bottom with "Ges. gesch" which is short for "gesetzlich geschützt", meaning 'registered trademark'. This type of marking was used on German made toys and figurines from 1900 until 1920.
