Historic Downtown Neosho
Description
Settled in the 1830's and incorporated in 1878, Neosho's historic and cultural center has always been the historic courthouse square and its surrounding neighborhoods. Originally inhabited by Native Americans, Neosho was first settled by European-American pioneers in the late 1820's, formally organized in 1839, and officially incorporated in 1878.
Early growth centered around burgeoning mining activity in the area. The first homes and businesses were built in close proximity to the abundant freshwater springs in the area that is now the courthouse square.
Centered around the 1936 Art Deco Newton County courthouse, Neosho's historic and cultural center has always been the courthouse square, downtown's beloved Big Spring Park, and the surrounding neighborhoods.
In 1993, the Neosho Commercial Historic District, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Since the late 1990's, thanks to various revitalization efforts and reinvestment by local citizens, historic downtown Neosho is experiencing an ongoing renaissance of culture, business, and community.
Today, historic downtown Neosho features historic street lights, renovated storefronts, modern sidewalks, as well as an eclectic mix of restaurants, shops, and services.
