The Tipton County Museum Veteran of the Month for September 2019 is Willie Elbert Dyson, who was born in Covington, Tennessee, in 1960. After graduating from Covington High School in 1978, he moved to Michigan to live with his sister and attend community college. His love of Country and a strong feeling of patriotism, however, soon overwhelmed him; and he felt the need to serve his country. In September of 1979 he enlisted in the United States Army and attended basic training in Fort Dix, New Jersey, followed by additional schooling in Aberdeen, Maryland. He spent a year and a half in Fort Stewart, Georgia, as a Track Wheel Vehicle Mechanic. He then transferred to D Company, 122nd Maintenance Battalion, US Army Europe in Butzbach, West Germany, where he worked as a Battery Shop Operator, a Generator Mechanic, and a Forward Support Track Wheel Mechanic for the next three years. In November of 1984 he was Honorably Discharged as an E–4 promotable. For his service to our country he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and M-16 Marksman Rifle badge. With Army life behind him, he was now ready to begin a new chapter in his life. He returned home to Covington, where he began a fruitful career with Delfield on February 6, 1985. He is currently a Line Facilitator there, although he has worked in many areas of the plant over the years. In addition to serving his country, Willie has been serving the Lord for many years. While stationed in Germany, he was blessed to pastor a local church there. For the past 26 years he has been pastor of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Henning, Tennessee. Family is very important to him, and he is grateful to have both his daughters, Cassandra Dyson and Chandra Dyson Somerville, each having 2 children, living nearby in Covington. Willie was nominated for Veteran of the Month by his good friend and May 2015 Veteran of the Month, John McBride. A reception will be held in Mr. Dyson's honor on Tuesday, September 10th at 6:30 pm at the Museum on Bert Johnston Ave in Covington. The public is encouraged to attend.

Mayor's Report August 26, 2019 We received very exciting news on August 15 that ALL THREE of our schools, Munford Elementary School, Munford Middle School, and Munford High School were recognized by the State of Tennessee as Level 5 and Reward Schools. A reward school is one with outstanding student achievement or growth over the past three years. Reward School recognition is the highest designation a school may attain. Congratulations to all our students, teachers, and administrators for their strong efforts to achieve this high honor. Our schools are one of the main reasons we continue to say, "Munford is My Kind of Town" We are now in the midst of Celebrate Season, having completed the second event of three with the 20th running of the Celebrate Munford 5K on August 17. Over 200 runners participated and a portion of the proceeds are designated to help fund the Munford-Tipton County Memorial Public Library. Many thanks to our title sponsor, Baptist Memorial Hospital-Tipton for their continuing support. The third and final event of Celebrate Munford 2019 is our annual festival to be held on September 21 in downtown Munford. This year's title sponsor is Admiral Roofing, owned by Roger and Stacy McMullen. We appreciate their support for Celebrate Munford over the past several years. Our theme this year is "Celebrating Talent" and our entertainment will feature Munford resident Keith Paluso, former finalist on The Voice and current lead singer for the iconic jazz and rock band Blood, Sweat and Tears. Keith has generously donated his time to organize an on-line talent contest with finalists to perform on center stage at Celebrate Munford 2019. And as usual, our nationally recognized Munford High School Band will close out the day. We look forward to seeing everyone on September 21! Our local paving plan has been completed for 2019 with several streets being paved. While many streets remain on the list to be paved, this was an aggressive program for the year. Also, Doctor Drive has been reconstructed and is now open with a turn lane on the North end at McLaughlin Drive. Additionally, the streets in Glenview Estates have been repaired and repaved. After 46 years in business Freds Dollar Store closed its doors in August. Freds had been a cornerstone of the business community and we will miss their friendly staff and great prices. The Haddad family is considering various uses for the building. Town-homes are now in construction at The Grove of Walker Meadows and will soon be available for sale; single family homes are soon to follow on Doctor Drive; Carwash USA is in construction on the corner of Highway 51 and Munford Avenue; and several subdivisions are in the planning and design stage. Great things are happening in "My Kind of Town." Warm Summer regards, Dwayne Cole, Mayor
