Quench the Urge to Smoke - Drink Water! April’s Healthy Community Alliance Focus is Tobacco Cessation: During the month of April, local businesses and organizations are focusing on ending smoking addiction. The messages focus on attainable, simple tips to quit smoking. The central idea for April is to Quench the Urge. The strategy is to drink water instead of lighting up a cigarette. Other tips to try include setting a quit date to prepare to quit smoking, eating right to replenish your body with healthy nutrients, and removing cigarettes from your car, home and work. These tips are intended to be simple and easily implemented to achieve lasting results. Both Delaware and Blackford counties have high rates of smoking. In Delaware county, 20 percent of adults over the age of 18 smoke. In Blackford county, 17 percent of adults over the age of 18 smoke. The Healthy Community Alliance provides addition resources for those interested in quitting smoking on their website (www.healthycommunityalliance.org). Good morning, this is the Chaplains’ Bright Spot for Tuesday, April 10th. As a father of two young kids, I’m sometimes surprised by the feelings of pride I get over my children’s accomplishments, growth, and blossoming personalities. It isn’t always easy being a parent or caregiver, but if we’re watching carefully there are these small moments of light that make the struggle worthwhile. I was thinking of this last night as my 6 year-old son and I were building Lego’s when he said: “Dad, I like what you’re building. Let’s add some more details.” He’s been working so hard on using kind words and expanding his vocabulary, so this was a rare double portion of parenting reward. Maybe you’re like me and you’ve found that parenting or caregiving is not all unicorns and rainbows. There’s a quite a bit of mud and storm clouds along the way—and then—every once in a while you get a passing glimpse that you might just be doing one or two things right. So today, whether you’re getting sucked down into the mud, feeling like it’s hard to leave family stresses at home or whether you’re flying high on the pride that comes from feeling that you’re doing something right—keep going. When we risk showing up for each other, for our kids, for our patients, or for each other we will eventually reap the reward. Join with me in prayer: “Loving Father, this family stuff is hard work. Help us as we risk our own safety, becoming vulnerable to the ones that you’ve placed in our care. We ask that you would strengthen us as we work to maintain a larger perspective on these lifelong vocations like parenting, healthcare, and building communities. In your Name, we pray, Amen” You are welcome to join us for a short devotional and prayer each weekday morning at 9am in the chapel. Have a great Tuesday!
