George Washington's Dentures

Happy Presidents' Day! Officially, the federal holiday is actually Washington's Birthday, which is February 22nd. Did you know that George Washington had trouble with his teeth for most of his life? He only had one of his original teeth left when he was inaugurated in 1789. His last tooth as kept as a keepsake when he did lose it and is currently owned by the New York Academy of Medicine. Contrary to popular belief, he did not have dentures made of wood, but had several sets made throughout his lifetime consisting of materials such as ivory, different alloys, animal teeth, and human teeth. This may seem odd to us today, but it was common during Washington’s time, especially among the wealthy, to have dentures containing teeth from other people. The popular theory that he had wooden teeth may have come from the appearance of his stained dentures because ivory discolors and stains easily. You can check out this video from the Donald W. Did you know that February is National Children's Dental Health Month? In celebration of that, Delta Dental is doing a coloring book contest for kids in grades K-3. Come by our office to pick up the coloring sheet and return it to us by February 20th in order to enter the drawing to be one of the six winners who will receive $100 from Delta Dental of Arkansas. This week Dr Coleman is in Limbe, Haiti helping people there with their dental needs. So far they have seen 50 patients and pulled over 100 teeth in 2 days. 2 more days of clinic for them so please continue to pray for their team and the people of Haiti. If you need anything this week in our office Dr Chris Rodriguez will be there to help you out.
