Deputy Chief Ranger Update from the North End: Just checked the tote road at McManus Brook this morning. The attached picture tells the story. 50 yards north of the Brook/bar the road is still soft (even on the middle). Also checked the tote road from Trout Brook Farm Campground to Burnt Mt. yesterday afternoon. Beyond TB Crossing is coming along. There are a few soft spots between Wadleigh Brook and Black Brook, but no quagmire. The first really bad spot is just west of Burnt Mt. Trailhead. This area needs some more time to dry and firm up.

Katahdin and Traveler Loop Trails remain closed. All other trails are open. Rangers checked trail conditions on the Abol Trail on Thursday 5/18. Snow remains in the trail tread and Tableland Trails are waterlogged. We will continue to check trails until we confirm that fragile alpine habitat is dry enough to handle hiking traffic.
Road Update: Newest update: 😁 Roaring Brook road open for day use only. The Park Tote Road is open from Togue Pond Gate to Nesowadnehunk Field Campground. The Tote Road remains closed between Nesowadnehunk and Trout Brook Farm Campground. Matagamon Gatehouse open to Trout Brook Farm Campground.😀

Chief Ranger Update: Yesterday, May 8, 2017, BSP South End Roads were checked from Togue to 1.7 miles north of Foster Field and from Togue to the sanctuary line on the Roaring Brook Rd. The Tote Road on the west side as far as Foster Field as well as Kidney and Daicey spur roads are shaping up nicely. They will be hardened up enough for rock raking / debris clearing to begin on Wednesday May 10 and are projected be open to the public by Friday morning May 12. Assessing conditions, I was only able to get 1.7 miles north of Foster Field. There is still considerable soft and heaved ground as one travels north. Friday afternoon this section will be checked again. Below is a photo of my stopping point 1.7 miles north of Foster Field. Once the road was cut in this area, muddy and soupy ground measured about 16" deep! Below is a 12" x 20" sink hole that has opened up in the last 3 days between Katahdin Stream and Abol Campgrounds. The Roaring Brook Road was checked up to as far north as the game sanctuary line. Conditions are still soft with some heaving north of Rum Picnic area. North of the sanctuary line, conditions are far too soft to venture. Below is a picture of of some nice and soupy ground about 100' north of the sanctuary line on the RB Road. At this point, a delayed opening of Roaring Brook Campground is probable.
Timeline Photos
Rangers continue to check Katahdin Trails. Still finding 1-3'+ snow. This much snow on the Abol Trail indicates the Tableland is not ready to withstand hiking pressure.
