Alfred C. Glassell, Jr. SUSTAIN Laboratory
Description
SUSTAIN (Surge-Structure-Atmosphere Interaction) is a University of Miami wind-wave tank that is capable of producing Category-5 hurricane conditions. The Alfred C. Glassell, Jr. SUSTAIN Laboratory, located at the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, is a state-of-the-art facility devoted to the study of air-sea interaction physics.
The sampling region of the wind-wave tank is 6x2x18 meters, enclosed by acrylic and ribbed by steel.
The fan system is capable of producing wind speeds of over 65 m/s at 50 cm above the water surface (over 100 m/s at 10 m above the water surface).
The wave system is comprised of 12 independently-controlled wave paddles, allowing for realistic, 3D wave simulations of the ocean surface.
