Previously we discussed possible causes of carpet rippling. Assuming you vacuum regularly, the only real remedy to carpet rippling is to have it stretched. This will minimize uneven wear from both normal usage and vacuuming. When do you stretch? Stretching should be done soon after identifying the reason for the rippling, and it should also be done prior to cleaning in order to reduce existing ripple marks and allow for more efficient cleaning. A common problem encountered with our customers is carpet rippling. If you notice ripples within a year of installation, we suggest you call the installer—it may be an improper installation. If you notice rippling after a year it may be caused by: (1) excess moisture (usually latex swelling underneath the carpet fibers) (2) frequent dragging of heavy furniture over carpet (hint: some carpets can get burned by friction/heat caused by quickly moving heavy furniture) (3) tack stripping loose or no longer attached to the loose carpet (4) wrong padding (too thick combined with low density) (5) age (carpet settles with use over time) Don’t miss our next post on possible remedies to help your carpet last longer.
