BLESSED are the CRACKS January 12, 2018 By Rabbi Yossie Denburg “Blessed are the cracked,” said Groucho Marx, “for they let in the light.” Jewish history agrees, for what is history if not a dark world slowly becoming a receptive channel for G-d’s light. This explains the age-old query: If we are all G-d’s children (and we are) and He is merciful (and He is), why 10 plagues? True the Egyptians were wicked, and the Israelites needed to be freed, but couldn’t G-d have found a ‘nicer’ way?

A MAGICAL PARSHA PRESENTATION As part of our program to bring the parsha to life, the First Grade girls participated in a parsha "magic show" with magician and phenomenal teacher Morah Chaya! The class witnessed water turned to blood, and watched falling ice on fire, and other amazing tricks. The girls croaked like frogs to give a sense of how loud and annoying it must have been. And they roared like different animals. How scary it must have been for the Egyptians! Bnai Yisroel wasn't afraid though.

A PARENT PARTNERSHIP WITH OUR SCHOOL Last night our parent body braved the harsh elements of a South Florida Winter to come to school. Hebrew Academy hosted a mid year review and Open House. The purpose was to give parents an understanding of the curriculum their children have been learning as well as their goals for the rest of the year. It was a great for parents to touch base with their children's teachers as well as other parents. Equally as important, just by going back to school it showed the students how invested their parents are in their education. The school administration stressed the value of parent input and parent partnership as the key to success of our school. Dr. Botwinick unveiled the new Homework Policy that has been established as a direct result of the suggestions from parents. #parentsforthewin

HOW DO YOU CONTAIN YOUR INNER MONSTER? In the Interdisciplinary Arts class our first graders have recently completed an exciting unit based on the story ' Michael's Monster'. Michael was a little boy who was being bullied because he couldn't catch. He just gave up and said he 'CAN'T' and went and sat in the corner of the playground. An imaginary monster - a Can't-a-sorous - grew in his mind. At the end of the story he stands up to the monster and tells it he CAN do things - lots of things and what's more he is even going to learn to catch! The monster disappears. We discussed many of the valuable messages of the story! Never give up - try and try again! Don't copy - be creative - everyone has their own imagination. Don't bully someone because they struggle, help them! Everyone has strengths and we are all different! Don't say "I can't!" The story led to many exciting activities: We learned that we can move creatively and make interesting sounds when we each became a 'Can't -a- sorous' ! We learned how we can physically work together with others to form an interesting creature with our bodies when we joined with others to form a single creature! We learned how to create dialogue when we were put into groups to enact the story. We learned about Public Speaking - how to stand, how to hold our hands, how to speak loudly and clearly when describing and answering questions about the Can't-a-sorous that we drew for the class. We learned about recycling and the need to reuse whatever we can to save our environment when creating our recycled Cant-a-sorous craft monsters. We were encouraged to think about our strengths and what we were good at when building our cage for the monsters with I CAN bricks.
