Get to know our team! Every other Friday, we feature an employee in our #CaveHillEmployeeSpotlight and this week we’d like to recognize Head Gardener, Maribeth Kahle! With the holiday weekend approaching, our grounds crews have been especially busy making sure their respective beats are in pristine conditions for our visitors. While that typically entails trimming shrubs, pulling weeds, and generally tending to the landscape of our gardens, some gardeners are also tasked with maintenance of popular spots, like the Tingley Fountain, which falls on Maribeth’s beat! On any given day, you can find Maribeth pruning, string trimming, or, sometimes, skimming the pool of this gorgeous monument. Prior to her tenure at Cave Hill, Maribeth spent 20 years with Valhalla Country Club, as part of their horticulture team. Her tenacious work ethic, warm personality, and deep knowledge of plants and their needs are so valued by her Cave Hill family; if you see her, be sure to say “Thanks”!
Patty Blackburn Semple (1853-1923) was the first president of the Woman's Club of Louisville, and president of the Louisville Free Kindergarten Society. As a major advocate for education, she promoted literacy among African American adults and encouraged African American women to register to vote after the legislature passed school suffrage for women in 1912. In 2020, the Cave Hill Heritage Foundation hopes to honor the life of Patty Semple, through the Women’s Suffrage Project. There are over 200 different species of stink bugs worldwide. Some are native to North America. This newly-molted brown marmorated was originally found in East Asia, and were not reported in the United States until September 1998, when they were collected in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Reports due vary to their actual arrival though. They get their name from an unpleasant odor released when you crush them or when they are protecting their homes 🐞🍃 #WildlifeWednesday 📷: Sarah Schaffner, Horticulture & Landscape Manager
