And in this immediately past evening's session, Bill Higgins was in for Monday night mix time. I played him the results of the mix hours he'd had me do since his session last week, and we continued directly onward. This session focused upon treatment of the layered 6-string and 12-string #acousticguitar parts in "Walked N2 My Life." The various rhythm parts, accent strums, and melodies have all been riding along reasonably well in the working mix, but now we are cleaning up EQs, shaping tones, putting the sparkle on, and giving each part its own distinction and clear presence in the mix. I've also done a lot of work recently on the #drums for this song,polishing up the deep but tight kick drum tone and thick, cracking snares from Taylor Kennedy's great-sounding Gretsch Drums. Catching up from Sunday's session: Brad from Moon Gloom was back. After tracking Brett's #drums last week, Brad returned for his second full-day Sunday session in a row. Since the band is just the duo of himself and Brett now, Brad is covering all of the #bass and #guitar for this EP, in addition to his keyboards and #vocals. It was an extremely productive day, with Brad completing tracking of the bass for all 5 songs, and all of the distorted rhythm and lead guitars. According to Brad, all that's left are a few clean guitar parts and a couple of keyboard parts, and we'll be ready for vocals! On bass, Brad played his Squier through the studio's SWR Workingman's 12 combo amp with the speaker miked plus a direct line from the amp, and we were VERY happy with the big, punchy tones we tracked. Fuzz bass for one song, and clean for the other 4. Bass tracking: AKG D112 on the speaker, through API Audio 512C mic-pre + 527 compressor, and Solid State Logic (SSL) 611 EQ. Direct line into Manley Labs Force tube mic-pre, Warm Audio tube EQ, and Dramastic Audio Obsidian compressor. The Obsidian is more frequently heard on my drum buss or stereo buss, but it's actually a great bass compressor, and reminded me to put it to work in this capacity more frequently! On guitar, Brad played a range of aggressive fuzz/wah/delay tones on two different Fender Strats through his Fender Blues DeVille combo. I miked the amp with Shure SM-57 on a speaker, and Sontronics Sigma #ribbonmic about 3 feet away and a couple of feet above the amp. I'm finding that the Sigmas really love this kind of placement, as opposed to several feet away but still lined up with the speaker. The 57 gave us the expected presence and clarity, while the Sigma gave us thick, dark, and chewy. Depending upon the song, we'll be able to balance those as desired to give each part its appropriate size and space in the mix. Guitar tracking: SM-57 through API mic-pre/compressor + SSL EQ; Sigma through Manley Force, Warm Audio EQ, Obsidian compressor. (Same two #outboardgear channels as for bass.) And once again, the Obsidian sounded phenomenal on the guitar tracks! It's just a beautiful piece of gear, only proving its worth and versatility further the longer I work with it. By the end of the day, Brad said his hands were tired and it took a lot of energy to track all day long! Sunday full-day #recordingsession: Brad and Brett of Moon Gloom were back to begin tracking for 5 new songs today, following up the two recorded/mixed/mastered here with the band's old lineup last summer-fall. We were all VERY happy with the big, powerful drum sounds tracked today, befitting of the new material adding some 90s rock elements into the band's synth-pop side. Just having re-listened to the King's X album "Ear Candy" a few nights ago, and feeling very inspired by the gorgeous, room-mic heavy drum sound, I was happy to lean that direction in today's tracking when it turned out that it would be a great stylistic match for the direction of these new songs!
