Right now is a wonderful time to see the cheerful blooms of Tennessee coneflower. Echinacea tennesseensis is native to the cedar glades of middle Tennessee. The recent history of this plucky flower has been described as an “ecological success story”. Thanks to the conservation efforts of a variety of groups and individuals, E. tennesseensis was removed from the federal endangered species list in 2011. To learn more about the Tennessee coneflower, visit http://knoxgarden.org/2015/08/tennessees-very-own-coneflower/ #tennesseeconeflower #echinacea #echinaceatennesseensis #nativeplants #exploreourgardens #tbt

Rudbeckia subtomentosa 'Henry Eilers' Quilled Sweet Coneflower is growing off of the Dogwood Trail. This variety of rudbeckia was discovered by Henry Eilers growing in an Illinois prairie. It is unique in it's petals are quilled and more yellow than gold. It will also grow and flower quite well under deciduous shade.

Meet the new member of our garden crew! Don Fike first came to us three years ago as a UT Extension Master Gardener volunteer. He recently earned a bachelor’s of science in plant sciences with a concentration in organic production from the University of Tennessee Department of Plant Sciences. While he was in school, he also worked as an intern with the UT's Organic and Sustainable Crop Production Unit and as the garden manager for the UTK Grow Lab. Excited to learn more about Don? Stay tuned over the next week to see the gardens through Don’s eyes as he takes over our social media. #welcometothegarden #knoxgarden #publicgarden #plantsciences #socialmediatakeover #ilovemyplantjob #growwithus

Hibiscus moscheutos is in bloom at the top of the Dogwood Nature Trail! The flowers of this native hibiscus are roughly the size of a dinner plate. Our ‘William Toovey’ crapemyrtle is covered in watermelon red blooms! Before our property became a botanical garden, it was home to the historic Howell Nursery. The Howells patented this stunning variety of Lagerstroemia in 1927, and ‘William Toovey’ is still popular today. You’ll find ours growing along Wimpole Avenue at the corner of the Row Garden. #bloomingnow #crapemyrtle #lagerstroemia #historicgarden #howellnursery #exploreourgardens
