Ms. Doty's 8th grade English students are viewing the famous "I Have a Dream" speech by Martin Luther King in honor of MLK Day next week. As they listen, they are following along and reflecting on the profound figures of speech and writing style. Then, they choose lines that resonate with them and decorate them on paper. They were silent during the speech! Very moving. #mlkday #whirlwinds

Congratulations to Elise Harris for being named the Annie Camp Student of the Week. Elise was nominated by Mrs. Knowlton and challenged Mr. Murphy to a trivia contest. Today was an exciting day for some of our Freshman English classes. Freshman English students have started the novel The Pregnancy Project. The novel deals with issues of stereotypes, identity, and how our family can impact our choices. Students in Mrs. Delaney's classes started the day off in the library. They heard from Ms. Addison, a co-worker that had a similar upbringing to the main character in the novel. Through Ms. Addison's personal story, students were able to glean the most important theme in the novel: "No matter the obstacles in your life, you can achieve your goals. You can get an education and become someone. It might take more effort and hard work, but you can get there." Several students admitted that it made the novel "more real" to them. When students came to English class later that day, Mrs. Delaney had several very different shoes placed on each group of desks. Student were given 7 minutes with each shoe to create fictional people that they believed would wear that shoe. Their fictional people had to have a name, occupation, personality traits, hobbies, accomplishments, bad habits, favorite activities to do while wearing the shoes, what people would say about that person, and why they think the shoes are perfect for the owner. Students had 6 different shoes that they created biographies for. Some of the people they created were people that are looked "down" on in society or that have habits that aren't valued. Students were then asked which shoes were the easiest to make negative assumptions about, and they shared some of their answers. It was then revealed what the actual owner of the shoe did/does. They were flabbergasted at how wrong some of their responses were. They then discussed some of the stereotypes we see in our community, in their lives, and throughout history. The lesson for the day? Don't stereotype or judge others based on the clothes they wear, the shoes they wear, the color of their skin, their gender, their home life, or anything else. People don't fit into the boxes that we want to place them in. People are more than their outer appearances. This is a lesson that we hope will stick with our students for years to come. #tolerance #caneclassroom #ACEnglish #Whirlwindnation
